Nathanial awoke with a start, his heart pounding hard enough that his whole body shook. Nicky’s name was on his tongue, but he could not remember the dream with any specificity.
Whimpering low in his throat, Nathanial turned on his side and curled into a tight ball. I’m safe. I’m safe. I’m safe. No one can hurt me. Not here. Not with Anita here. Not with Micah here.
Either his whimper or his thoughts roused Micah from where he slept on the other side of Anita. Nathanial heard the bed springs creak and the whisper of Micah’s feet on the floor. The Nimar-Raj moved with a grace that gave away his lycanthropy and a surety that explained his position as the leader of the St. Louis pard to Nathaniel’s side of the bed.
“Hey,” Micah breathed, running his hand down Nathaniel’s head, petting the thick braid that Nathaniel used to keep his hair contained while they slept. “I’m here.”
Nathaniel’s response was a soft cry and Micah eased onto the edge of the bed, slipping under the covers and pulling the younger wereleopard firmly against him. “I’m here.” Micah whispered again.
Behind him, Anita rolled over and curled up against Nathaniel’s back. She didn’t wake up, but she tossed a hand over Nathaniel’s hip and pulled him closer. “Mmmm.” She murmured, before falling back into a deep sleep.
Her closeness, Micah’s touch – both helped chase away the remnants of the night terrors. “Better?” Micah asked softly, feeling Nathaniel’s tension drain away slowly.
“This is the best it’s ever been,” Nathaniel answered honestly, feeling Micah’s lips quirk into a smile. The Nimir-Raj didn’t move away and Nathaniel closed his eyes.
“Yeah.” Micah agreed, his body rumbling slightly, almost as if he were purring. The sound of it lured Nathaniel back to sleep. He didn’t dream again that night.
