(i) Yagami Light
It scared him, being at the mercy of a confessed killer. It scared him to know that the system failed and the murderer was back on the street. It scared him to realize how powerless he was in the face of overwhelming evil.
The Death Note didn't scare him. It was the answer. Light trusted himself more than he trusted the courts. He believed that the word was better off with the evil people dead. He cried when he deliberately used the Death Note for the first time. He told himself it was because someone was finally making a difference.
(ii) L
It couldn't be helped. To test his theory, L needed a (victim) subject. Lind L. Taylor was perfect, right down to the middle initial. "He might die." Watari didn't condemn, but he did remind.
"It can't be helped. To find Kira..." L didn't look up. He was afraid that he'd break. It scared him, this power he had over another, but he couldn't (wouldn't) back down.
When Lind L. Taylor gasped his last breath, L lowered his head. He wouldn't ask forgiveness. Blinking away tears, he leaned forward. "Watari, we have work to do."
This one death couldn't be helped.
