Request: Kitty/Lance Happy Ending
A/N: For June!Challenge Day 15! Half way baby!!! I didn't expect to make it this far in a hundred years! Whoot!
Kitty looked at Kurt dubiously. “Where’s this party supposed to be at again?”
“At Duncan’s!” The other teen told her excitedly. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
“I don’t know.” Kitty made a face. “Duncan isn’t really…”
“What?” Kurt asked, confused.
“Nice.” Kitty finally finished. “I mean, I know Jean likes him and all, but… he’s kind of a jerk.”
“So what?” Kurt rolled his eyes exasperatedly. “You don’t have to spend the whole night talking to him. Just say hi and then boogie down.” To demonstrate his point, Kurt wiggled his hips around while moving his hands to music only he heard.
Grinning, Kitty shook her head. “You’re a party junkie, Kurt.”
“Jah? Well, you like to dance… so come.”
Kitty sighed, but the truth was she did like to dance. And if Kurt was going, she knew she’d at least have a dance partner for the evening. He was nothing if not energetic.
“Wonderful!”
Kitty couldn’t help but grin as he bounced his way down the hall. She supposed there was nothing wrong with a party at Duncan’s. After all, the other X-kids would probably be there, at least some of them. Scott wouldn’t go barring an order from the Professor or a request from Jean. But Jubilee and Bobby wouldn’t miss a party for the world and Kurt was a lot of fun, too.
She looked back down at her book, studying for her history test until it was time to go to the party. Reading about the Battle of the Bulge, she didn’t see Kurt look back at her wistfully as he walked out of the room.
************************
The music pounded loudly and Kitty and Kurt gyrated enthusiastically along with it. They were both grinning and laughing as the party carried on around them. Other teenagers crowded into the living room, around the sofa and coffee table, and sometimes *on* the sofa and coffee table, dancing just as enthusiastically.
Kurt had been careful to put his back to the wall to try and keep anyone from accidentally tripping over his holographically concealed tail, but he wasn’t overly worried. As far as he could see, this night couldn’t get any better. Kitty was here! Dancing! With him! Okay, so he knew that Kitty wasn’t actually here *with* him, but still… technicalities. He was going to enjoy it while it lasted.
Kitty had her eyes closed and she jumped and moved in time to the fast paced beat. Kurt didn’t mind as it gave him time to study her without her noticing. He loved the way her pony tail bounced with each move and he thought that she looked fantastic in a black skirt with a bright pink sleeveless top. Although he tried, he couldn’t completely keep his eyes on her face, and he grinned as he looked her over. She was beautiful and for the moment she was dancing with him. The only thing he needed now was for a slow song to come on. He thought that Kitty would dance with him for sure if he asked and since they’d been dancing together for an hour, it wouldn’t seem awkward or staged if he asked.
A loud noise over by the door drew his attention and he felt his stomach drop. No. Not now. “What do they want?” he griped.
Opening her eyes, Kitty turned to see who he was looking at. “It’s just Pietro and Lance,” she turned back to look at him quizzically. “I’m sure they just want to dance. They wouldn’t come all the way here to cause trouble.”
“They might!” Kurt snapped back more harshly than he’d intended. He’d seen what Kitty hadn’t. Lance had come into the room and looked around, obviously searching for someone. When he had spotted Kitty, a slow smile spread across his face and now he was leaning against the wall watching them dance. Kurt wasn’t afraid that Lance wanted trouble. He was afraid that Lance wanted Kitty. Even more, he was afraid that Kitty wanted Lance, too.
Suddenly, he didn’t want to dance anymore. “I’m going to go get a drink.” He turned and walked quickly along the wall towards the kitchen. Part of him hoped that Kitty would follow him, but a quick glance over his shoulder showed that she was still dancing, only now she had turned and was dancing with a couple of the girls from their class.
A quick glance at Lance proved that he was still against the wall, chatting with Pietro, and Kurt relaxed. Maybe he’d get to spend the party dancing with Kitty without a problem then.
He was pouring a soda when a sudden breeze made him look up, right into the silvery blue eyes of Pietro Maximoff. “Hey furball.” Peitro sneered at him. “Sticking to the kiddy drinks like a good X-geek?”
“Leave me alone, Pietro.” Kurt retorted, irritably. “What happened? You finally annoyed Lance so much he sent you away?”
“Nah,” Pietro’s eyes glittered in amusement. “He made his move once you were out of the picture. I don’t know why he waited, though. It’s not like she’d have chosen you, anyway.” Kurt’s heart dropped into his stomach, but his eyes flashed angrily.
Shoving past Pietro, he walked back into the living room and saw Kitty dancing with Lance. Worse, she was smiling and laughing at the same time. Watching them dance for a few minutes, he saw something in Kitty’s expression that wasn’t there when she looked at him. When the music slowed down a minute later, he turned and left before he had to watch her go willingly into Lance’s arms.
“See?” Pietro was smirking at him. “Told you she would have picked him anyway?”
Kurt couldn’t answer as he shoved past the speedster for a second time and fled into the den on the other side of the kitchen. Sitting in an empty chair, he stared into his soda and wished he’d never invited Kitty to the party after all.
**********************
Kitty nodded when Kurt announced he was going to get a drink. She knew he didn’t like Lance or Pietro, but she didn’t mind either of them really. Well… Pietro could be obnoxious at times, but Lance was really sweet most of the time.
She caught the scent of his cologne before she felt him tap her shoulder. Turning, she smiled at him and felt her stomach flip a bit when he smiled back. “Wanna dance?” he asked and she nodded, moving away from the girls she had been dancing with. She ignored their giggles, but only because she couldn’t look away from Lance long enough to scowl at them.
After a moment, she’d forgotten there was anyone in the room but her and Lance anyway. “I didn’t know you were coming to the party?”
“Yeah?” Lance grinned at her, tilting his head to the side. “I didn’t know you were coming either. I just got lucky.”
Kitty blushed, but she couldn’t stop from laughing. “So did I. I’m glad you came.”
“You are?” His voice dropped a bit, huskier, and he reached out to catch her and spin her around, before dropping her hand again.
Breathless, Kitty nodded, unable to speak and still feeling the place on her hand where he had touched her.
Smiling again, Lance nodded. “Good.”
When the music changed to something slow, Kitty didn’t hesitate to step into his arms. They swayed gently to the melody, his arms circling her waist and her arms hesitantly going around his neck. When he tugged her closer, she lay her head on his chest. Even though she knew she could phase through him, he felt so solid and sturdy that she almost believed he could hold onto her forever if he wanted and she would let him.
She hoped the music would never end and when she looked up at him, her brown eyes meeting his gray ones, and when he leaned down to kiss her, she didn’t pull away. She knew she should; she knew he was one of the ‘bad guys’; but she couldn’t make herself care. Not when he was looking at her that way, not when her whole body felt warm in his arms, and not when his lips were touching hers.
He pulled away first and she sighed happily. “Yeah, I’m totally glad you came.” The thought of actually being with Lance was astonishing, but Kitty felt certain that she could get used it.

“You look like someone stole your puppy and left it in the rain.” A voice behind Kurt startled him and he jumped. Turning he saw the grinning face of Tabitha “Boom-boom” watching him.
“You scared me!” He accused.
“I couldn’t tell when you jumped nearly five feet, Blue.” She retorted, teasing him. Making herself comfortable she sat in the chair next to his and kicked her legs up and over the arm. Despite himself, he looked at her thigh where her skirt rode up. Looking back to her face, he blushed scarlet when she asked, “Did you like what you saw?”
With the holographic inducer on, Kurt knew that his blush was visible to her and he groaned. “Why are you tormenting me?”
“I was gonna ask you to dance, Blue, that’s all. It’s hardly torture.” Tabby smiled at him again when he looked at her surprised. “I promise I ‘m a pretty good dancer. Better than that ditz you’re obsessing over.”
“She’s not a ditz!” Kurt rose to Kitty’s defense and blushed again when Tabby laughed.
“So you admit your obsessing?”
“No.”
“Good, then dance with me.”
“I don’t know…” Kurt hesitated, but Tabby stood up and grabbed his hand. She didn’t stiffen or pull away from the feel of the fur on his hand and wrist, just smiled at him.
“I do. Dance with me, Blue, and let your cares drift away on the music.”
She tugged him into the middle of the floor and when the music shifted from fast paced to slow again, she didn’t hesitate a second to push herself into his arms. Automatically, he held her and she smiled. “See? Told ya it wouldn’t hurt.”
“Tabby, I…”
She lifted a finger to his lips and stopped him. “Shut up, Blue, and dance.”
Speechless, Kurt obeyed. The party hadn’t gone at all like he had hoped, but maybe it wouldn’t be a total loss after all. The thought that maybe Tabitha liked him… He smiled and tightened his arms around her. The thought that anyone could like him, knowing the way he looked, was actually revolutionary.
He wasn’t over Kitty yet, but… he could get used to this, he decided as he spun her into a twirl. Her laughter floated over his head and he pulled her back against him. Yep, not a loss at all.
