Yagami Soichiro Wept
Yagami Soichiro cried four times in his entire adult life.
He cried when he learned that his parents died in a car crash because he couldn't believe that he was alone.
He cried when his son was born, because he couldn't believe how beautiful and perfect the baby was. He also cried when Sayu was born because she had her mother's eyes.
The last time was the day that Light burst into the Investigation Team headquarters and proclaimed that he believed he might be Kira. Soichiro cried because although he didn't want to believe it, he also couldn't disbelieve it.

Surely, surely.
Watari watched the relationship between L and Light develop and held his tongue. He had never seen L so wrapped up in anyone before, let alone a suspect in a murder. When L announced his plan to keep the young suspect handcuffed to him around the clock indefinitely, Watari kept silent.
Later, he sat at a table and sipped tea, ignoring the trembling of his fingers and the moisture that swam in his eyes. He had to trust L – he had always trusted L. Surely, this wouldn’t end up being the mistake that it seemed on the front end. Surely.

I Am Justice
(i) Yagami Light
It scared him, being at the mercy of a confessed killer. It scared him to know that the system failed and the murderer was back on the street. It scared him to realize how powerless he was in the face of overwhelming evil.
The Death Note didn't scare him. It was the answer. Light trusted himself more than he trusted the courts. He believed that the word was better off with the evil people dead. He cried when he deliberately used the Death Note for the first time. He told himself it was because someone was finally making a difference.
(ii) L
It couldn't be helped. To test his theory, L needed a (victim) subject. Lind L. Taylor was perfect, right down to the middle initial. "He might die." Watari didn't condemn, but he did remind.
"It can't be helped. To find Kira..." L didn't look up. He was afraid that he'd break. It scared him, this power he had over another, but he couldn't (wouldn't) back down.
When Lind L. Taylor gasped his last breath, L lowered his head. He wouldn't ask forgiveness. Blinking away tears, he leaned forward. "Watari, we have work to do."
This one death couldn't be helped.

Tears of Emotion
(i) Tears of Frustration
Matt heard hours after Mello and Near that L was dead. Roger called the rest of the kids together and broke the news in mass. L was dead. Near was taking over as the next L.
Matt left the room before Roger even finished his sentence. He ran down the hallway, knowing already that he was too late. Skidding to a stop in front of a closed door, he lifted one hand and pressed it to the wood.
Steeling himself, he turned the knob. The room was completely empty and a single tear slipped down his cheek. "God damnit, Mello."
(ii) Tears of Rage
Mello raged against the impossible his entire life. L's death hurt, because it pointed out - again - that Mello still couldn't cut it - couldn't beat Near. It gave him a sick pleasure to know that he had found out about the Death Note and shinigami's before Near, and he forcibly quieted the voice in his head that told him that he was no better than the criminals he associated with.
It wasn't until he saw Matt gunned down by Kira worshippers that Mello understood fully what he'd risked in this game. He raged against it. And he cried.
(iii) Tears of Victory
It was over. Kira was dead, killed by the shinigami he’d associated with and if Near understood the death god’s obsession with finding ways not to be bored a little too well, he pushed it aside.
That night, the first night he’d not spent worrying how many people Kira would kill while he still failed, he thought back to those he had lost – Watari, L, Matt… Mello.
Playing with the puppets he’d made for them ages ago, Near softly whispered goodbye to each, ignoring the tears that dripped down his face. He’d won, but they’d all lost in the end.
