“Get out.”
He ignored her, crossing to the hospital bed in a rush from the door. “What happened, Rin? Hatori-san said you fell from a window..”
“Get out.” She repeated, dully.
“Did you fall? How badly are you hurt?”
“Get. OUT!” She screamed the last word at him and finally succeeded in pulling him up short.
“What?” He shook his head, looking lost and confused.
“I said get out!”
“You don’t mean that.” Haru said softly.
“Do not tell me what I mean,” Rin replied acidly. “How would you know? How could you know?”
“Rin…”
“I don’t love you anymore, Haru. I don’t want you anymore.”
”Rin, please…” He looked as beaten as she did, but there wasn’t a mark on him, not a visible one, anyway.
“Please what, Haru?” She sneered at him. “Are you going to beg me to reconsider? Go on, then. I might enjoy that. But the answer will remain the same.”
“Why?”
“You’re not fun anymore.” Rin hated herself for saying those words. She hated herself for making him look like his insides were being ripped out. She hated herself for being so weak…
She hated Akito. She loathed him with intensity that scared her, but she was afraid. Not of what he would do to her. But of what he would do to Haru if he suspected, even for a second, that Haru loved her or had ever loved her. In the back of her mind, Rin prayed that Akito would believe that it had all been physical; flesh against flesh; heat, need, pleasure… but not love. Never love. If Akito knew that Haru loved her, even still, even when she was destroying him with her words, Haru would never be safe.
Rin was used to physical pain. It had been inflicted upon her for her entire life. She could not fathom life without it. But even more, she could not fathom a life without Haru. By sending him away, she was saving him. By saving him, she would never really be without him.
He would never know why. He could never know why. Haru was all passion and fire and his anger was dangerous. He wouldn’t hesitate to turn on Akito, and she could not allow that. She knew, more than he, what a risk defying their god truly was.
Still, she hated herself. “You bore me.”
“Rin…” His normally serene expression was gone, replaced by so many emotions she couldn’t be certain what he was feeling. Anger, despair, fear, regret… disgust, perhaps.
She hated herself. “Get out.”
And a tiny part of her hated him for listening to her and leaving.
