Drabble: And We Will Travel North (LOTR)

Title: And We Will Travel North
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wizefics
Characters/Pairing: Elladan, Elrohir, Estel
Rating: All Audiences
Warnings: none
Book/Source: LOTR, vaguely movie-ish, as are all of my LOTR fics, but not really noticeable
Disclaimer: Not mine, but Tolkien wanted to build a mythology and I think that gives me the right to play in this sandbox.
A/N: As always, feedback is welcome and appreciated. Written for the weekly drabble challenge at [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly - "North"

This decision has long been made. It had been decided nearly twenty summers ago, when a small child had taken our hands in his and called us brothers.

Despite our differing lineages and bloodlines and his mortality, we are kin - brothers of the heart and brothers at arms.

So we will journey with him until he no longer needs us by his side and that day will be bittersweet. Our hope is for his success; our alternative is our common deaths.

Estel leads; we follow, becoming for a short time that which we are not: Men of the North.

Ooooh, this is very powerful... both the decision, and the use of the term 'Men'.

I really like this, especially anything with the twins and Estel :>)

Love the last line: 'becoming for a short time that which we are not: Men of the North.' I've always liked the image of Elladan and Elrohir with the rangers, especially the idea that they only joined them to support Aragorn.

I like this very much, particularly the way it also seems to fit the "Doom" challenge we had last week.
This decision has long been made. It had been decided nearly twenty summers ago, when a small child had taken our hands in his and called us brothers.
You've brought in the theme of Estel's fate or doom here very nicely, and how the doom of the Elves is entwined with his.
...that day will be bittersweet. Our hope is for his success; our alternative is our common deaths.
How like the Elves, in their farsightedness, to read so much in the hands of a child!
...becoming for a short time that which we are not: Men of the North.
This is particularly lovely, the demonstration of fealty to kin and king. Wonderfully written!

Very nicely done.
And to them it would only be a 'short time' from their point of view, but this shows their love and commitment, not only to Estel, but to their father's hopes for the future, because they would also have known Estel's fore-bearers going back several generations.

ahh, this is refreshing. the brotherly love that moves these strange, beautiful elves is addicting. thanks for bringing more of them here - and, also, this speaks loads for the trials that their heritage bequeathes them - the choice between Elves and Men from their father. spectacular.

It's so great to imagine how much affection and care they have for each other.

So we will journey with him until he no longer needs us by his side. I really like this line. The dedication and support is lovely.
