RECATHON: Magnificent 7
Time for a fandom that knows itself so well that a good half of the stories are AU. *grins* I have to say, I'm not familiar with it, but that may have to change. Yowza, some of these gentlemen are hot enough to mean I can turn off the heat.

A few notes:
1. Some of the links may lead to off LJ sites.
2. Each reader is responsible for double checking warnings on the story itself. It is not my job, nor the job of anyone else, to make sure you’re aware of the contents of the story.
3. I encourage you all to leave feedback for the authors! Feed the authors and they will continue to feed us.
4. This would not have happened if it were not for the generous help of many, many people. In particular, I would like to thank
dj_aida for making the lovely banner above, to
tygermama and
ithildyn for helping to advertise and to
randi2204 for coding the recs list.
5. If you encounter any mistakes, please drop me a note in the comments and I’ll do my best to fix it quickly.
6. Fics with multiple recs are indicated with an *.
7. Lastly, feel free to squee in the comments if you’re so inclined.

A Home for Christmas. G. All seven. Ezra emotional angst...'nough said?
Once in a Lifetime. R. Ezra and the rest of the seven. It is an awesome OW story because the six rally around Ezra when he has been ambushed. And the interaction between the seven is spot on and I love how the six perk up Ezra’s spirits in the later chapters.
Ashlyn wrote Second Chances. PG. Chris/Buck, Ezra/Vin. Great alternate version of the ATF unit formation; very realistic look at what alcohol abuse does and more real world.
(This author's other works are also recommended.)
Bernadette wrote A Murder Hunt. PG for language. Ezra & JD, Josiah Sanchez. Bernadette has written a terrific “Four Corners Detectives” AU in which Ezra and JD are Detectives hunting a killer. It is also fascinating to read one of the seven, in this case, Josiah, as the bad guy.
Blackbird wrote Wind Change. R. Chris/Vin eventually; Ezra. The slow build up, the very realistic view on how same sex relationships were viewed in that time (Old West) and oh boy, the way she pictures Chris, Vin and Ezra is just amazing.
BM wrote Ally Cat. PG-15. Ezra-centric, with the rest of the seven. An ATF AU fic. Ezra’s cover is blown and he’s on the run. Nice Ezra moments in this and dramatic tension.
BMP wrote:
Aftermath. PG-13. All seven, but mostly Buck, Chris & Ezra. I think it's the BEST in the whole fandom (together with another story), and that's saying something since there's awesome fic in this fandom. But BMP not only tells a harrowing and very suspenseful tale, a story that has it all (deep friendship, loads of angst, h/c, suspense), she's one of those authors who's spot on on the characterization of all seven guys.
Breathe. PG-13. Chris, Buck. Besides, again, BMP's great writing and great characteristics, this is her second story I rec, because I love how it's structured. It's actually a circular story and she's done a wonderful job to weave past and present together.
Ugly Eddy. G. Ezra, Chris, Buck. I think all of her fic is awesome and can't recommend enough to go and read everything she wrote, but I'll stop with three *sigh*. This one is awesome because it will have you in stitches and because Ezra is just awesome in it, awesomely snarky. *g*
Cattraine wrote Duende. PG-13. Chris/Vin. Sad and haunting, and absolutely lovely.
Charlotte C. Hill wrote:
Alleys. R. Chris/Buck, Ezra. Terrific look at a bust going wrong and just how much Chris and Buck love each other. Nice character study of Ezra.
Benediction. FRM. Chris/Buck. This is a Christmas fic so it's perfect for the season and it's set in the ATF universe which is a good translation of the 7 to a modern world. It's also one of those stories that gives the reader a look at Chris's emotions and motivations, his doubts and insecurities, and that makes it even more special. Don't worry though, all seven of the guys are here to some degree with a lot of Buck and Vin which makes this a great story of friendship as well as Christmasy cheer.
Fractured. PG-13. Chris/Buck. One of the things that keeps this fandom alive through stories, is how well the seven boys translate to completely different AUs. And what's done heavily in stories is make them modern day cops/agents/etc. This story starts so very sad, with Sarah and Adam's death and what it does to Chris. Chris unravels, but Buck stays by his side and slowly the mending starts. The writer shows all those steps back to life in just the right doses and in beautiful prose.
Howling at the Moon. PG-13. Chris/Buck. Terrific melding of the Two Blood and ATF AUs with a wonderful way for the rest of the team to find out the truth. Very witty.
In the Beginning. FRAO. All seven, Chris/Buck, (Vin and JD are children). I just loved Buck’s heart taken over by young Vin and JD.
Thanksgiving Fryer. PG. Chris/Buck, Ezra. The team celebrates Thanksgiving.
Charlotte C. Hill and Maygra wrote:
The Skip Trace novels. Adult. Chris/Vin/Buck. Maygra is a fantastic writer, and so is Charlotte, so putting them together is a reader's fantasy. Charlotte finished the Skip Trace novels on her own and did a brilliant job with them. The universe is one of the best of the AUs in the fandom.
The Big Score FRAO. Chris/Buck, Vin, Ezra. Possibly my very favorite fanfic. It's part of the Skip Trace AU. A thoroughly fun enjoyable ride as Chris and Buck try to bring a very cunning ornery skip in. I love Chris and Buck getting introduced to Vin in this universe. Ezra was a lot of fun as well. Perfect!
Charlotte C. Hill and Farad wrote Fighting Smoke. FRAO. Chris/Buck/Vin. I love the Skip Trace universe and this is yet another story that portrays C/B/V so beautifully. Vin taking care of a sick Buck and Chris was adorable. There was so much wonderful relationship exploration mixed with fun and humor. I also loved getting a glimpse of Buck's mom.
Clair Beaubien wrote Choices. K. All seven, original character. This fic delves into Vin's past and creates a rich, full history and family for him that is just wonderful to read.
Cmurph wrote:
Acquisition. PG. Vin, Chris and the rest of the seven. I love tough disillusioned loner Marshal Vin Tanner learning to trust again, and love Team Seven taking to Vin and becoming like family. I particularly love Chris and Vin butting heads and then seeming so companionable at the ranch, but all the team members were done well.
Comes a Horseman. PG. All seven, Adam, Sarah. It's a fascinating AU where Sarah and Adam lived and Vin is young man (rather than one of the seven) but he winds up getting involved in their lives and that of the town's with his skill and bravery. This is one of those stories that, as soon as you finish it, you immediately run to the author's list to see if a sequel exists (it doesn't, unfortunately). The entire universe presented here is so richly developed and plays out so wonderfully that you can't stop yourself from reading it.
CV Puerro wrote the Campfire series. FRAO. Chris/Buck. Awesome series leading up to a perfect first time fic. Pre-One day out west, gives us a great backstory for these two.
Debra Hicks wrote Such Bold and Bloody Causes. PG-13. Ezra, Nathan. Great look at Nathan, his confidence in his skills, his relationship to Ezra and the others. Lovely look at how bad getting shot in the OW really is and the determination of the seven to stay together. Great H/C.
Deirdre wrote When My Heart Finds Christmas. PG for language. Vin and the rest of the seven. This ATF/OW fic set during Christmas is wonderful because it is a crossover between the OW Mag 7 universe and the ATF universe in which Vin suffers a head injury and gets transported back to the OW.
* Diamondback wrote Camino del Diablo. NC-17. Chris/Buck, Ezra/Vin, and the rest of the seven. Because it's begun beautifully and strictly within the series canon, and from that spring vampires a la John Carpenter, sex, violence, love passion, mind-reading, hunting and being hunted. You name it, this has it. Even romance. This is the other story I find, with Aftermath, the best this fandom has to offer. I just love how Diamondback has woven the tv series canon into it to make this supernatural story come to life. I don't want to spoil things, this is a story you need to experience from the beginning. This is one of the most recommended fics in the fandom and it's easy to see why when you read it. Diamondback has created such a wonderfully detailed story and captured the characters so perfectly, well, I wish that someone would make a movie out of this - I'd surely buy a ticket.
Estevana Rey wrote Darkest Hours. PG for somewhat graphic medical procedures. Ezra, Vin & JD. What could be better than Ezra, Vin and JD all suffering in one story!
Farad wrote:
Are You In? FRAO. Chris/Buck/Vin. Pure hotness, and still wickedly fun dialog and interesting back story, and lovely angst.
Aspect and Essence. FRAO. Chris/Buck/Vin. More wonderful Skip Trace, with lovely angsty Vin backstory, and Buck and Chris looking out for him.
Endo. FRAO. Vin/Josiah. After reading Shifting Gears, I wanted Vin's story. I can not imagine it being told any better. I loved the sweetness of this. The relationship between Vin and Josiah was lovely. Farad makes me love J/V even though I'm still a C/Ver.
The Quadrant Mountains. FRAO. Chris/Vin. I enjoy stories where Vin's heritage is explored. I love the established relationship between the two as Chris helps Vin face unwanted notoriety because of his past. Wonderful C/V.
Torques. FRAO. Vin/Josiah. I keep going back to this because I love the character study of Josiah as a profiler and enjoy his special relationship with Vin. Dark and intriguing.
G. M. Atwater wrote:
A Gathering of Lions. PG. All seven, with original character. This ATF fic is wonderful because it a outsider’s POV of the seven and how he sees them.
Candles of the Wicked. PG-13. JD, Chris. This one comes close to my two favorites, very, very close. The writing is superb, the details make it come to life and this is another writer who is great with the characteristics of all seven. It's also a fabulous growing up story of JD. And well, I love suspense, which this has in abundance, even if the writer takes her time to set everything up just right and the whole OW setting feels very authentic.
Gil Hale wrote:
* Runners. PG. All seven; Vin & Ezra are teens, JD is a child. First young Vin and Ezra save JD from an evil stepfather, then they mend Chris' wounded heart. I love how all the characters are used so beautifully as the seven come together. Wonderful humor and dialog throughout, and some memorable haunting scenes. My favorite fic. Everything Gil Hale writes is awesome, but I wanted to mention this one in particular as well, because it's such a delight to see Chris slowly tawing under the influence of two recalcitrant teens, one of which has no intention of trusting him at all - and how being under his protection makes the two start to believe in a future again. And while all that is going on, Buck falls head over heels not for a lady, but for a frightened young boy who badly needs a protector and a home.
Unforgotten. G. Vin, Ezra, Chris, all seven. Because Gil Hale wrote it and I don't think she even knows how to write bad stories. I love her characterisation of the seven, and the warmth with which she writes them. This story is my favorite of her, darker than usual for her, but also a story about strength and perseverance. But I recommend all of her work wholeheartedly.
Giselle wrote:
Changes. Adult. Chris/Vin. While most of her stories are set in the ATF Alternate Universe, her characters are strong and her stories interesting and not mired in the ATF fanon-characterizations, but more canonical. Awesome writer.
Zero Hour. Adult. Chris/Vin.
(This author's other works are also recommended.)
Gwyneth Rhys wrote Lucifer Match. Adult. Chris/Vin. Gwyneth writes the OW characters wonderfully, and she has an excellent sense of the issues - real issues - of the time period, better than the people writing the show. Her characterizations are fantastic and her writing subtle. One of the best of the OW writers.
(This author's other works are also recommended.)
Heather F. wrote Fortitude. PG for language and violence. Ezra, all seven. A fabulous OW tale in which Ezra is badly hurt, and makes his way back through to the desert to Four Corners to let Chris, Nathan and Josiah know that Vin, Buck and JD are in trouble. And even hurt, Ezra tries to rescue Mary when she is taken from town. I just love a wounded Ezra determined to get to his friends and still being protective even when he is hurt.
Heidi wrote Traditions and Imitations. PG. All seven. The OW fic is an awesome look at the seven during a Christmas Eve in Four Corners. This story lifts my spirits and makes me chuckle when I read it.
Helen Adams wrote The Art of Rhetoric. Ezra, all seven. In this wonderful OW story, Ezra uses his skill with words to confuse a miscreant that wants to harm him, giving the other six peace keepers time to come and rescue him from the miscreant.
J. Brooks wrote:
Fishbait. G. All seven. One of the funniest fics I have ever read. The seven spend a lazy afternoon (with no one shooting at them) at a local fishing hole and Buck gives a lesson in "noodling" (i.e. hand-fishing for catfish).
* Inkslingers. PG. All seven, Mary Travis, OMC. One of the best things, IMHO ,about Mag 7 fic is the amount of just plain fun, laugh out loud fics there are. This is one of my favourites in that category. The guys have to get the anniversary edition of the Clarion out after Mary injures her back. Hilarity ensues. There’s even a Viking funeral!
Jinn wrote No Rain. G. Vin, Chris. Because of Vin's voice. I adore his voice in this. Chris gets hurt, but the way Vin reacts to it, his thoughts about it, make this a humorous fic nonetheless. And Vin's fears make it heartbreaking at the same time. Wonderful combination of emotions and wonderfully shown by the author simply using Vin's inner voice and Chris' quiet reaction to it.
JoAnn wrote Yankee Blue. PG for language. All seven. Ezra in uniform...yummy!
Jody Revenson wrote Unexpected in Common Hours. PG. Buck & JD. Very touching story about a bonding moment between Buck and JD - with strong emotions, but without h/c.
jojosimco wrote Strange Bedfellows. PG-13 for language and violence. All seven. It’s a fabulous OW tale with Ezra hurt/comfort and multi POV from the others and how they react to Ezra being hurt.
Jordan McKenzie wrote On Your Horses, Boys!. R for language and violence. Ezra & Chris, with the rest of the seven. It is an awesome rewrite of the episode, “Vendetta.” The story has both Ezra and Chris hurt with the other seven peace keepers comforting the best they can and still fighting the Nichols at the same time. “On Your Horses Boys!” is a Novella of 76,780 words. Words of this OW tale will pull you into the action from beginning to end.
Judy L wrote A Star to Guide Him Home. PG. Ezra, all seven. This OW fic is awesome because I love how the author wove this Ezra centric story together and how she was inspired by the fabulous art of
romanse1. It is also a Christmas themed story and a wonderful gift of a tale.
Julia Verinder wrote:
A Man's Best Friend. R. Buck, Ezra and the rest of the seven. Hilarious fic about Buck's reaction to his favorite body part. He doesn't deal very well and gets the others involved whether they want to be or not. Great look at medical care in the OW.
Served Cold. R. Vin/Ezra, Vin/OMC. Great case fic and explores Vin and Ezra's relationship and how the past can affect it.
* K. Hanna Korossy wrote A Lifetime Appointment. PG. Chris, all seven. A post-Obsession story, with very good insight into Chris's thoughts while he is between life and death; and into the feelings of others as well. Chris doesn't cope well with the knowledge Ella was responsible for the murder of his family and wonders what his place is in life. He slowly finds out.
KETanner wrote:
A Bad Day. R. Chris/Vin. Because Chris really IS having a bad day! The writer's humor is subtle and that makes it all the more lovely to read it. Plus her writing style is wonderful. I recommand all of her work, actually.
The Brass Ring series. NC-17. Chris/Vin, Chris/other. As said, KETanner is one of those writers who is definitely worth checking out. But especially this series, which is her tour de force and my personal favorite of her work. In her clear and beautifully descriptive writing style she shows us Chris Larabee's journey to hell, from which it's hard to recover. Luckily for him there is Vin who doesn't give up on him, and behind Vin the other five.
KT wrote:
Team Seven Instructions. G. All seven. This ATF is awesome because it makes me laugh every time I read it. It is instructions to medical and administrative personal dealing with the seven and it is a fun read.
The Reunion. PG. All seven. The most interesting post-ATF story I've read. A good view on the guys' lives and personalities after the Team, along with some action and a lovely show of teamwork. Oh, and there is some angst as well!
LaraMee Deux wrote Christmas Miracle. PG. Ezra, Maude Standish. The fic is terrific because It has Maude without an apparent ulterior motive taking care of an ill Ezra during Christmas.
Leila wrote Trilogyish, which consists of Blind Faith, Open Handed and Cresting the Waves. NC-17. Chris/Vin. I had to put these three together because I love how this whole arch plays out. I don't want to spoil it, but I love how this changes from Chris worried about Vin not being happy/adjusted to his new life to it being more about Chris. Really love how Vin loves Chris so deeply and is happy just making Chris happy (giving his all), but Chris really doesn't understand that love.
Limlaith wrote:
Anatomy of a Storm. NC-17. Chris/Ezra. Because these two are beautiful together and because Limlaith writes them beautifully. And I do mean beautifully! Not one word is too much or out of place. And she's another writer who is spot on with the characters.
And Yet So Far. R. Vin/Ezra. Both funny and touching; a great description of the start of a relationship that has to be kept secret. Also fun look at the team
* The Love Lies Waiting series. NC-17. Chris/Buck. Six lovely short stories paint very realistically the slow build up of a friendship into so much more. Limlaith is made of awesome and her writing is some of the best in the fandom. I love this series which is set in one of Mag 7's many AUs ATF because it seems so real and keeps the characters so close to the canon. A lovely series of stories with all 7 in them about the changing relationship between Chris and Buck.
Lisa wrote On Peso. G. Vin, all seven. Even Chris comes to believe in Santa after Vin weaves his Christmas tale.
Maygra wrote:
The Firefly AU. Adult. Chris/Vin. Because no one tells a story better than Maygra, no matter the fandom or the universe.
The Shadow Riders AU. Adult. Chris/Vin/Buck. Because no one tells a story better than Maygra, no matter the fandom or the universe.
(This author's other works are also recommended.)
Meg Tipper wrote:
Equitable Action. PG-13. All seven. This is the first story in the NYC AU, and it’s a great introduction to this unique modern AU where the boys are either private investigators of lawyers.
The Four Kingdoms. PG-13. All seven, plus other familiar faces from Mag7. “In the Four Kingdoms, Sir Larabee is the champion of a fallen kingdom, Vin Tanner a scout and archer, Lord Standish a thief, Josiah Sanchez a mage, Nathan Jackson a healer, Buck Wilmington a former Captain of the Guard, and JD Dunne a stable-boy. In Book One, a maddened King is attempting to recreate an ancient empire by combining the Four Kingdoms into one, and, when the story begins, he has all but succeeded. In order to prevent the darkness that will come with the empire, these seven men were destined to come together to stop him.” This is an absolutely enthralling fantasy AU which captivates me every time I read it. I recommend reading all of Meg Tipper’s stories.
Megan Kent wrote:
Dogs and Damned Dogs. FRM. Chris/Buck. Megan has written a wonderful slice of life look at C/B in Old west setting. Takes place after Vendetta. The characterization is dead on and the details of the setting are so perfect you can almost hear the theme song.
Falling Down. FRAO. Chris/Buck; JD and Vin are children. I’m a fan of young Vin and angst, and this story of Chris/Buck in a committed relationship where they cared so much for their adopted charges captivated me.
Mitzi wrote 48 Hours. PG for language and violence. Ezra & Buck, all seven. I love the friendship between Ezra and Buck in this OW fic and how it looks really bad for them but the others come to the rescue just in the nick of time.
Monica M. & Debra M. wrote Seven Toy Soldiers. R for language and violence. All seven. “This story is basically a retelling of the 1991 movie Toy Soldiers with our seven as the main characters. If you haven’t seen it, don’t worry, ‘cause those who have will barely recognize it. We had to fiddle a bit with the boys’ ages to get them all into high school at one time, but they are all here. The high school in question is Regents, an all boys prep school. (Oh, don’t feel bad for Buck! Y’all know where there’s a will there’s a way, and that boy’s got a lot of will!) We just had to ask the question of what the boys would be like if they had met as teenagers. And naturally, these being our seven, they just had to run into trouble.” This story was the first AU of the boys as teenagers that I read and it still captivates me today as it did then.
moogsthewriter wrote Because I could not stop for Death. PG-13. Ezra, Death. It is an interesting story told from the POV of Death as he deals with Ezra.
Nettie Roe wrote The Magnificent Quest. PG-13. Chris/Vin, the rest of the seven. A bit heavy here and there on the 'innocent and oh, so magnificent Vin' side, but the rest of the story is a superb telling of a fantasy tale. I can only applaud the writer on the whole setting of the story, the plot and how she has transformed the seven so well to a fantasy AU.
Nomoretears wrote A Little Piece of Paradise. PG. All seven. Because it's absolutely hilarious, even if you don't like prank stories:). And if you do, you just shouldn't miss that one!
Non Sequitur wrote Pardon Me. PG. Ezra, Judge Travis. I love Ezra’s schemes in trying to get the Judge to sentence him with more time as a peace keeper and also enjoy Judge Travis’s thoughts in this OW tale.
nottasha wrote:
Turkey Lurkey. PG. Ezra & Buck.
nottasha is a wonderful author and this is a very humorous, twisted take on a Thanksgiving story. An evil stalks the town and Ezra and Buck take it on. Any of
nottasha's Mag 7 fic is a wonderful story.
Chaucer's Horse Tale: Sick Horse. PG-13. Chaucer, Ezra, all 7 and their horses. This funny, OW fic is wonderful because it is from an equestrian POV. And I enjoy reading about how Chaucer sees his herd and his rider’s herd. I recommend reading all of
nottasha’s “Amazon” series.
Patricia Semeler wrote Lessons in Sharing. PG. Ezra, all seven. (OW) My favorite Christmas story. Not overdosed with sugar or angst, just friendship, bonding and belonging.
Penny M. & May Robinson wrote Between Heaven and Hell: A "Little Britches" AU Christmas Story. PG. Buck, JD, Chris, Vin. This “Little Britches” OW AU has little Vin and little JD adopted by Four Corners peacekeepers, Chris Larabee and Buck Wilmington, respectively. The story is wonderful because the authors combine hurt/comfort, angst, Family and Christmas beautifully all in this tale. Summary of the story is: “With Christmas only a few days away, all is not well in the Larabee/Wilmington household. Buck's injured, JD's worried and Chris is torn between staying home and taking the boys on a pre-planned adventure intended for the whole family. A compromise is reached but the consequences could be dire.”
quietcontrary wrote:
A Matter of Perception. PG. Ezra & Chris, all seven. This ATF fic is wonderful because after Ezra misunderstands something Chris said, Chris is able to set Ezra straight on the matter.
An Exercise in Deception. G. Chris, Ezra, Nathan. Heh, Ezra getting Chris to impersonalize him? Complete with outfit? What's not to like! Especially since ultimately Chris will stay Chris *g*
Robin Serrano wrote The Magnificent Bordello. FRAO. Chris/Vin, Buck, Vin/Ezra, JD. Vin, Chris, and Buck were just too sweet not to love in this. I loved a young Vin willing to whore himself to keep JD safe while working so hard to keep JD from doing the same. Loved Chris' feelings for Vin, and Buck and Ezra's support. Vintastic fic. :)
Ruby wrote In a Heartbeat. FRAO. Ezra/OFC. Ruby created a new AU here called the No-7 AU. The seven work in various law enforcement positions in modern-day New Orleans. While on the search for a serial killer, Ezra is forced to work with a former lover. Ruby is one of the best Ezra writers I have ever encountered and she brings him to life beautifully!
sablecain wrote:
Frogs in a Kettle. PG. Ezra, Josiah & the rest. A post-Serpents fic, do you need more? :) Some trust issues are getting worked on, and some demons from Josiah's past are laid to rest. Well-written and believable story.
He Sees and He Understands. PG-13. Ezra & Chris. Two story series where Chris finds out more about Ezra's past and how much Ezra knows about Chris' grief and pain. Tremendous emotional impact.
Sammy Girl wrote:
A True Friend. FRAO. Chris/Buck, teen Vin and JD. Heartbreaking story, but I love the emotions and history of the Family Matters AU presented in it, and it’s a beautiful story even if it does break my heart.
The Hound of the Standishes. R. Chris/Buck, all 7, eventual Ezra/Vin. Because she did it, she worked a classic Sherlock Holmes story into a Magnificent seven slash story of epic proportion. Just the way it's written is worth reading it: diary and journal fragments, letters, notes, transcripts together tell the story, and it works, beautifully. A very rare type of story, this.
Sara wrote Tracker. R. Chris/Vin. This fic shows the development of Chris and Vin's relationship in the harsh world of the Old West with its prejudices and how quick lives can get lost. I utterly adore the role Sara gave tracking in this story; it certainly feels authentic to me.
Sealie wrote Couresy Gibbous. PG-13. Vin, JD, Chris and Buck. One of the best Little Britches fics out there; realistic children and great suspense. Lovely use of canon. Nice family feel. Very readable.
Stan Lee wrote:
Becoming Family. FRAO. All seven, Chris/Buck (Vin and JD are children). Very gritty look at Chris and Buck taking in a young Vin and JD. Dark at times, so much so that I disliked parts of it with Chris and Buck firm to the point of cruel to Vin, but it also showed their deep concern in a time where survival was tough. I found these four becoming a family very sweet and heart wrenching. Moreso because of the fierce emotions and wills involved in the rough OW setting.
Family Matters. FRAO. Chris/Buck, Vin, JD. Vin and JD are teens in this AU living with Chris/Buck. I love the way this story builds. Vin keeps getting into trouble for fighting because of Chris and Buck's relationship. I love how this causes Buck to look back at his childhood, and I found the parallels and differences poignant. I enjoyed all of Stan Lee's Family Matters stories.
Have Yourself.... FRAO. Chris/Buck, Chris/Vin, JD/Vin. I'm a sucker for a good Christmas story, and I enjoyed this Escorts one where they turn around all their awful past Christmases to enjoy a special one together. Makes you appreciate what you have.
Mistakes. FRAO. Chris/Buck, teen Vin and JD. Wonderful story about a hard week for Chris and Buck, and the boys. I love the humor and the different views of the events of the week. Beautiful resolution between family. I love the Family Matters AU.
Starting Over. FRAO. Chris/Buck, Chris/Vin. I found this an intriguing story of love and friendship. C/B are the primary couple, but Buck has left Chris because of an affair with Vin. Chris, Buck, and Vin come together trying to put things right. I loved this exploration of how everything happened. By the end, you could understand what went wrong. No one was trivialized. It felt real, natural, and to me quite haunting as to how easy it is to have something so perfect and not realize you're taking it for granted, losing it.
The Goodnight-Loving Trail. FRAO. Young Chris/Buck. First, it is Old West and has the feel of canon to it. Second, the depth of characterization is amazing, if you’ve read any of Stan’s writing previously then you know what I mean. Third, the depth of the details and tone of the dialogue is so good that you’ll practically smell the cattle. (Okay, not without a really good imagination, but still it is great) and Fourth, the way that the characters fit together is a joy to read. It makes you wish it were longer.
Sue Bartholomew wrote Ghost of a Chance: A Magnificent Seven Christmas Carol. PG. Ezra, all seven. This OW fic is awesome because it is a re-telling of Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol" Magnificent Seven style with Ezra visited by three ghosts of Christmas. Sue was one of the first writers that I read in the Mag 7 fandom and she helped me fall hard for the gambler.
Sue Necessary wrote Driven. PG. Vin, Chris, all seven. Sometimes I just need wonderful Vin fic. I loved Vin patrolling the roofs, protecting the others, his feelings of guilt at letting down the guys, and thinking the gang is disappointed in him. Even moreso, I love Buck and the gang's reaction and how worried they are about him, and how Buck reads him the riot act because he's part of a team now and needs to understand it. Enjoyed all the characters, particularly Vin, Chris, and Buck.
SueN wrote Of Mice and Men. Nc-17. Chris/Vin. Because it's fun, one of those stories that will have you laughing out loud! But it's also hot as hell. What more do you want? *g*
Susan Zell wrote Memories of Eden. T for death, language, violence. Buck & Chris. Buck tries to change the past, but will he succeed?
The Cohorts wrote The Brief but Heroic Saga of Ezra and Elijah Standish. PG. Ezra, Vin, Chris & Buck. Very funny! Twists some fanon and clichés of the show. Call back to some show dialog in funny way. Very nice to read.
The Desperado's Daughter wrote A Christmas Redeemed. PG. Ezra, all seven. This OW fic is fabulous because “Ezra is missing at Christmas. Finding him is one thing, but saving him is something else again. The boys learn something about family and giving.” “Originally posted as "Redemption." This was one of the earliest stories that I read in which Ezra was missing and the others were worried for him and looked for him. And I love it as much now as I did then.
* The Fly on the Wall Gang wrote Room Keys to Paradise. FRAO. All 7, Chris/Buck, Vin/OMC, Ezra/JD hinted. This fic is hilarious, from beginning to end. Written by a group of very talented writers it gives us and adventure of errors with the all 7 characters being portrayed with loving care. A modern story set in the ATF verse, it gives us a good long read with lots of laughs. Very funny look at the team going to a conference and can only get rooms at a gay only hotel. They adapt.
The Neon Gang wrote In the Depths of My Despair. PG-13. Chris/Vin eventually. What do you do when you wake up without feeling, hearing or sight, and in pain? The most awful thing to happen, and almost impossible to cope with without a friend who manages to get through to you. What makes this story special is how the Neon Gang manages to describe the horror of such a situation from the victim's point of view, from the inside out as it were.
Tidia wrote Hillbillies and Geeks. PG. Ezra, Vin. Another favourite humourous fic, this one set in the ATF AU. Vin and Ezra are assigned to Team Two as punishment, and their plan to take it easy for a week goes awry when their car breaks down in the boonies and they are rescued by a rather interesting family.
Tiffiny wrote:
Losing Control. NC-17. Chris/Vin, Buck, JD, Nathan. It's one of the best I've read about the aftermath of rape, because it shows these men trying to deal with it as I think men would. No, there's no talking about it, there's silent struggle and when the others suspect what has happened there's a quiet support. Raw, honest and luckily also uplifting in the end.
Paradise Lost. R. Chris/Vin. What do you do when your lover forgets about you, literally? But only about you? This story is heartbreaking in Chris' struggle to cope with Vin's selective amnesia after an accident and his fight to walk again. But the struggle within Vin isn't easy either, because he doesn't understand and he feels lost, knowing something vital is missing from him. Nope, Tiffiny doesn't believe in easy romance.
tipper_green wrote The Ballad of Mr. Mead. PG-13. Ezra & Chris. Great look at Ezra and his place in the town and the lengths he will go to protect it.
Tonny wrote:
After. PG-13. Buck, Chris, Judge Travis. It's a look into the future: ten years after the seven men met in the small town of Four Corners. I just like this look at where the seven are in their lives at that point, and also at how certain things that never got closure due to the sudden stop of the series have been worked out here.
Right Hand. G. Chris, Vin. There aren't many stories that deal with the fact that Chris is a gunslinger. This short fic does, and especially what being a gunslinger means to the gunslinger himself.
True Enough wrote:
Separation. Adult. Chris/Vin. True Enough is an author who writes accurate and wonderful OW, canon characters and stories. True to the series itself, her characters are complex and her stories realistic to the time period.
* This Hard Land. Adult. Chris/Vin. Because it's sheer beauty. I can't say it any other way than that. The writing style, the details, the characters, the unfolding of events, sheer, utter beauty.
Violette wrote:
Blame. R. Chris, Vin, Ezra, the rest of the seven. ATF. Because Ezra plays hero while some of the others blame him and think he is running. Lots of action, angst and h/c - and well written, too.
Comfort and Joy. PG. Ezra, all seven. This ATF fic is awesome because it is Ezra’s first Christmas with the team and he supposedly has plans with his mother but a shooting lands him in the hospital on Christmas day. The others find out and rally around him. Violette gives me such “Comfort and Joy” with this story every time I read it.
wneleh wrote Dunne Deal. PG. JD & Buck. Very funny but realistic look at how JD joined the ATF at a very early age. Terrific punchline
wolfandboarfics wrote:
Comfort by the Shot. PG. Buck & Vin. The fic is awesome because the author does a marvelous job of showcasing the friendship between Buck and Vin without a word spoken between the two.
Salvation Through Resurrection. Adult. Chris/Vin, Chris/Buck, various others. WB is one of the most talented writers in the fandom; in a fandom that has generated more AUs than there were episodes of the show, WB's AUs are original and inventive, and she's not afraid to take the characters into paths that are challenging and make sense. Absolutely wonderful writer.
They Can't Hurt Me. R. JD, Nathan, a bit of Chris. Short, but utterly heartwrenching. lj user="wolfandboarfics" is an awesome writer, but alas, most of her stories are WIPs, so no reccing here. She also has small gems like there laying around and this one is one of her best. With a few words, actually with one, she makes a very sad story in something that hits you in the guts.

Yolande wrote Candle of Reflection. PG. Ezra, Chris and a deaf boy. This OW fic is fantastic because Ezra and Chris and a deaf boy are sheltered in a shack because of a blizzard around Christmas time. I love how the author manages the tension between Chris and Ezra. Also love how Ezra and Chris make Christmas special for the boy. This story is one I always reread at Christmas time.
Zeke Black wrote:
Toss the Dice and Invest a Dime. NC-17. Chris/Ezra. Zeke Black mostly writes OW, but this series is set in a modern day AU that actually works for a m/m relationship. Don't get me wrong, I love ATF slash stories and just suspend disbelieve, but this, this is actually possible in a law enforcement setting. Plus it gives the best reason I've come across in slash fics for Chris to turn to a same sex relationship after losing Sarah. Not that Ezra doesn't have to throw all his charms into the battle at first....
Snags. Adult. Chris/Ezra. another of the best stylists in the fandom, Zeke also tells a wonderful, complicated story about the relationships between people, especially these men. Her OW series, Snags, is the story of complicated relationships, not just the one between Chris and Ezra but also between Chris and Vin. Her AUs are also compelling and complex, rich with characterizations.
The Chestnut-Gatherer. PG-13. Chris/Ezra. Chris/Ezra is definitely my favorite pairing in this fandom (as far as you can speak of one since, hey, seven hot men....) and no one writes them better as Zeke Black. Maybe as good, but not better. This is yet another writer who only has great stories, so do yourself a favor and read them all. What I love about the Chestnut-Gatherer is how well she shows the restrictions two men faced in the OW who wanted to be in a relationship. And how hard it can be when no one knows. Ezra all but ripped my heart out....

heathenseyes vidded Misery's Companions. PG. Chris/Ezra implied. Hey, it's Chris/Ezra! And I love the gloomy atmosphere heathenseyes has been able to put into it. I think the vid works with the Evanesence's music as well, but for those who are willing to put the vid on mute and play the song it was originally set on instead, here's the link to that song as well.
krisdouglas vidded You'll Be There. G. Chris, Sarah, Adam. The defining characteristic of Chris Larabee is without a doubt the scars he carries from losing his family. This video is about just that: Chris missing them.

Heather F. wrote Fortitude.

Words of this OW tale will pull you into the action from beginning to end.

Monica M. & Debra M. wrote Seven Toy Soldiers.

After.
