"So, what did he say?" Kitty demanded, dropping onto the sofa next to Rogue. "Are you healed?"
"It's a miracle." Rogue nodded affirmatively.
"I didn't realize it was that bad of a sprain." Kitty looked stricken.
"It wasn't." Rogue corrected. "But it's Friday night, we don't have Danger Room Practice, the Brotherhood are all behaving themselves, and…" She trailed off.
"And what?" Kitty pressed, feeling suddenly nervous.
"Well, Ah remember someone promised me a date." Rogue sounded unusually tentative. "Ah was hoping…"
"Yes."
"You don't know what Ah was gonna say." Rogue protested, but she was smiling.
"Doesn't matter. The answer is yes."
"Ah was hoping you could help me with the chemistry homework since Hank is gone all weekend."
"Oh, well… sure."
"And Ah have to launder all the uniforms for Scott and Jean, since they're with the Professor and Storm in New York City."
Kitty wrinkled her nose. "Yuck. But, if you really need help…"
"And Kurt was hoping we could help wash the X Jet tomorrow, because he, Bobby and Tabitha went to some horror movie marathon…"
"Rogue." Kitty interrupted. "There had better be some form of date in this to do list. Pizza, a movie, walks in the moonlight…"
Grinning, Rogue fished a DVD out from under the sofa cushion. "Ah was thinking that since everyone else is going out, we could stay here tonight."
Kitty smiled. "That's more like it."
The doorbell rang and Rogue stood up, crutchless, to go answer the door. She returned a few minutes later with a large pizza. "And you mentioned pizza. I hope you like mushroom."
"You thought of everything!" Kitty laughed, but her heart rate sped up. "You must have been planning this."
"As soon as Hank told me Ah was healed this afternoon." Rogue nodded. "You have no idea how much work it was to get everyone else out of the house."
"I'm glad you did." Kitty said softly. For a moment, she couldn't look away from Rogue's eyes. Then, blushing furiously, she stood up. "I'll get plates and sodas. Be right back!" She ran through the wall into the kitchen and took a deep breath.
Everything was going better than she'd dared hope. Happy, she gathered napkins and red pepper and added it to the tray, along with two cold sodas and some paper plates. Carrying it carefully, she got back to the den just in time to see Rogue start the movie.
"What did you rent?" She asked, setting down the tray and flipping open the pizza box. Grabbing a slice, she bit into it and sat down on the sofa with a contented sigh.
"It's a surprise." Rogue came to sit next to her, grabbing her own slice of pizza. "Ah hope you'll like it."
Kitty watched the previews with half an eye. The rest of her mind was focused on the girl next to her. Rogue looked relaxed and happy. Impulsively, Kitty dropped her plate onto the coffee table and then leaned over and pressed a quick kiss to Rogue's cheek, through her hair.
Then the whole room went dark.
"What just happened?" Kitty squeaked, heart in her throat.
"Ya kissed me." Rogue sounded shocked.
"And that blew out the lights?"
"Doubt it." Even in the pitch black, Kitty could tell that Rogue was trying not to laugh. "Probably just a coincidence."
"Oh."
"What happens if the lights don't come back on soon?" Kitty asked, nervously, after a few minutes of silence.
"Then Ah guess we try the last part of that date you wanted and go for a walk." Rogue promised, slipping her gloved hand into Kitty's.
"Rogue?"
"Yes?"
"This is the best first date ever."
