Sarah let her hands trail down the cotton material of Cameron’s dress. “Hold still,” she ordered and the Terminator stilled obediently.
“I do not understand why this dress is important.”
“It’s for a school dance.”
“So it is an important social undertaking in a young person’s life.” Cameron sounded like she was reading from some manual and Sarah’s mouth tightened.
“Yes, it is.” She finished straightening the material and moved around to eye Cameron’s hair critically. “That’s the only reason that I am letting John attend.”
“It is illogical and not important to our mission.”
“It’s important to growing up and trying to be as normal as possible.”
“It’s abnormal,” Cameron fidgeted and Sarah held her still with a grip to her chin. Taking a brush, Sarah touched up a few strands of hair.
“Not when you’re human. You wouldn’t understand.”
“I’d like to understand.” Cameron frowned.
“A high school dance,” Sarah explained as she pulled a pair of earrings from her dresser drawer, “is a rite of passage. It about being with someone that you like, trying to sneak alcohol, kissing…” She pushed the earrings through Cameron’s ears, trying to ignore the soft skin under her fingers and the hair that brushed over the back of her hands.
“You are unhappy that we are going?” Cameron misread the signs she was reading from Sarah. “Your heartbeat is speeding up.”
“I’m not unhappy,” Sarah sighed, stepping back to look at the finished product and nodded. “Now get going before John leaves without you.”
“That would be illogical.” Cameron shook her head but did as she was told. Sarah followed her downstairs and watched as John and Cameron left for the high school dance.
Derek grunted from where he’d sat on the sofa and Sarah turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow. “Do you wish you were going?”
“I wish for a lot of things that will never be.” Sarah answered, before walking back upstairs to her room. Her fingers tingled.
