My own thoughts on this list )
It was very pretty.

And eventually, I will stop giggling about the fact that I had NO IDEA what that movie was about. SPOILERS )

Also, computer generated young!Jeff Bridges is... scary.

I think the best part of the movie was the preview for Pirates 4! Whooo hoo! A BIG MOVIE ALL ABOUT PIRATES! I feel my fannish interest piquing!

Being Nosy

Dec. 27th, 2010 10:36 pm
I have been remarkably uninvolved with fandom the past few months (year?). I really miss it.

I think that I just need to be reinvigorated. So, tell me flist, what exciting things are you looking forward to in the New Year? What fandoms should I be a part of that I'm not? What awesome fic exchanges are coming up that I shouldn't miss?

Please, tell me!

OMG. This show was clearly MADE for me.

I can't wait.
I'm going to make a second serious!post about my feelings with regards to the latest rounds of fandom uproar. To my astonishment, I find that my thought patterns have settled to the same conclusion with both the issues of race!fail and issues regarding the hurt/comfort paradigm.

In sum, this is my opinion -

"Authors, write whatever you want, but be prepared to stand behind it. Do not feel that you're entitled to a pass if you fail. If you write something, and people are upset about it, you should be able to explain why you wrote what you wrote and still sleep at night. If you cannot do this, then it's a safe bet that you have, indeed, Done It Wrong."

For a little bit of background, I wrote this post on DW (which is the same as this post on LJ) about an incident where I failed in the past and got called out on it. And you know what, I survived just fine.

Here's the short of it - I have two jobs, both require me to write a great deal and both require me to write persuasively. Also, both jobs require me to obtain feedback from my bosses/editors. In both jobs, I've been told to do better before, and it hurts my pride and it makes me upset and at the end of the day, I suck it up and do it better.

(And for the record, I had an asshole!boss once who threw something at me that I'd written and demanded, "What the hell is this shit?!", so it's not like the critiques I get in my professional life are all that nice. Just saying, for comparison's sake.)

And here's the long of it. )
I just saw the Merchant of Venice for the first time. (Yes, I am also shocked by the lack of education here.) I have a mix of reactions. All I knew of the play before was the "Has not a Jew..." speech which seems to be quite progressive for Shakespeare's time. Then I saw it in context and I... don't know anymore. Was it a mockery? Was it intended to be sympathetic? Or was Shylock supposed to be a simple villian, which he does not come across as.

Also, is it my slash glasses, or were Antonio and Bassanio supposed to read like a romantic couple?

Finally, I cried in the court scene. I also got heart palpitations and freaked out a bit when I though it might go badly...

I will be adding this to my Yuletide list this year.
I am not going to link to the J2 racefail that is going on at the moment, because if it's not on your flist, just click on mine and you'll see it everywhere. What I'm going to do instead is talk about an experience I as a writer had with a wonderful, talented and damned brave beta reader. (She will probably read this, and should know who she is. If she permits me to name names, I will, otherwise, consider her as just Awesome Beta.)

Wherein I Fucked Up, Got Called on It by a Beta, and Fixed It Before It Turned into Epic!Fail )

Didja miss me?

I've now been to and returned from the UK, where I spent time in London, Derby, Birmingham and Wales. I've also been to North Carolina, where I went to Heroes Con in Charlotte.

I'm exhausted, but also rejuvenated.

In quickie R/L news, I have to find a new place to live right quick and work is still work-like. My life will never be dull, will it?

In fandom-y news:

1. I've missed everything anyone has posted in the last three-ish weeks. Please link if I needs it. I trust you know what I need. :D (Fics, picspam, announcements, etc.)

2. I'm getting ready to gear up Marvel Crossing. So, you know, if you're bored and want to help... *ahem*

3. I'm feeling the urge to write again. This is fantastic, because it's been months since I felt like that!
I'm actually running out the door to work tonight (blah for late closing! yay for money!), but I'll be back before too late tonight and around online. I want to play some memes and I want to get some writing done.

So, I figure it's time for me to be nosy again!

What's everyone working on? And what are you most looking forward to? Both questions should be taken fannishly. :)

Ta for now! Back soon!
How has no one ever told me how awesome Better Off Ted is?

Fail, flist, fail.

Blood +

Feb. 16th, 2010 02:51 pm
It's official. My brain is now as obsessed as it was when I was reading/watching Death Note. I even found myself a new shiny icon (Hagi/Saya).

I also managed to spoil myself a tiny bit while I was looking for icons, so I'm peturbed, though I'm going to pretend like I didn't see spoilers. *nods*

What I need from anybody is recs. Please, tell me there are good fics out there around this anime/manga. The comms on LJ all seem to be dead.

Second, everyone go watch this. It's streaming on Netflix and very, very good. Then I can pester you for fics. :D

This is my plan.
Yes, I am tha far behind, but... I bought it, then life made me not care about much, then I lost it, then I moved, and now I've found it and read it all last night/this morning. I also have Volume 23, which I will probably read tonight.

VERY belated thoughts and rambling )
I came into fandom two ways - X-men and Dragonball Z. Back in the days of Yahoo Groups, I spent more time in the anime/manga fandsom than in any others. For some reason, when I came to LJ, that wsn't the case. I think 95% of my fandom activity is now comics or live action fandoms.

That's well and good, but...

I miss the anime and manga fandoms!

So, I'm going to make an effort to seek out more friends from those fandoms and be more active it them.

Right now, I'm nearly finished watching Blood +. In short, it is amazing. No Real Spoilers )

So, has anyone else seen it? I have desperate need to discuss. Did I mention that it's also about some sort of vampire-things called Chiropterans???

Epic and awesome!
These are some things that I've found of interest lately.

* [livejournal.com profile] holmes_big_bang

* [livejournal.com profile] sncross_bigbang

* January Recs Post: Hurt/Comfort - Rec your favorites!

* [livejournal.com profile] ficfinishing is taking sign ups! Go and see for yourself!

Personally, I've not gotten much fannish accomplished in the last week or so. Although I did sort out my list of To Dos and I did sign up at [livejournal.com profile] ficfinishing and encourage you all to consider it. It's a very useful community, in my opinion. Very motivating.

* Rumors of Comics Big Bang abound, but nothing definitive yet. *impatiently waits*

* I need to organize my memories to include the latest Recathon posts. I need to finish reading the last of Yuletide. I need to make more [livejournal.com profile] crack_van recs and check out and see what's going on at [livejournal.com profile] sequentialcrack. (And I encourage you to all consider signing up to make recs. The lists of volunteers are geting low!)

What are you guys working on? I'm nosy and I'd like to know. :)
Since I think a lot of people on my flist are here for recs, I thought I would float an idea and see how it goes over.

If I posted a montly recs post with a theme - any fandom, any rating, anything goes - and just allowed you lot to make as many unscreened recs in the comments as you wanted, would you be interested in playing?

Drop me a comment if you are and let me know if you have suggestions or ideas. This would be VERY low pressure and maintenance, but hopefully fairly fun. :)
Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

They're so cute and so little! They make me think of the upcoming movie about dragons, and how much I used to want one. Especially after discovering Anne McCaffrey back in the day. *sighs*

***********

I spent some time tonight getting reacquainted with my Yuletide canon. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it so I'm pretty happy with the request. Plus, this year, I'm pretty sure my recipient will hang around for it! *lol*

How's everyone doing on their Yuletide fic? Inquiring minds want to know.

************

Work has been busy but pretty good. I'm pleased with my day today and that's more than I can say on a lot of days. Tomorrow, I'm stuck at home until Comcast comes and gets their cable boxes back from me. I'm going to get up anyway, though, and after I eat pie for breakfast and have coffee, I'm going to work on getting things straightened up around here.

If I have time, I'll dip into Yuletide canon a bit more.

************

The Holiday Recathon is looking very very good. I'm so excited you guys! *runs around in circles*

I seriously can't wait to read all the fic that's been recced. Some of the stories are old favorites, but a lot of them are new. Whoot!

*************

Also, thanks for all the virtual snowflake cookies! What a fun thing to find waiting for me! *HUGS TO YOU ALL*
I saw someone use this header earlier and liked it. I'm stealing it. Regardless, some news of interest (or potential interest):

* I now have internet at home! I owe things to people and you will get them tomorrow.
* The Recathon will close tomorrow as anticipated. This basically means that I'll lock the post on Tuesday morning when I get up, probably. Coders, you will be alerted at that time!
* I still need to make my recs, but I can't do that until the post is locked, since all my comments are visible. *ponders*
* I am not going to finish Nano, but I did get about 38,000 words written on it and I'm very pleased with myself for that.
* I'm pretty much done moving. I just have to grab the last handful of things tomorrow and do the walk through. This will likely be emotional for me, since I'm a big wuss.
* Ryan Reynolds is in Smokin' Aces. I knew this, but I forgot and I now think that he's actually Wade Wilson in pre-insane days being all kinds of bad ass. Also, Chris Pine as a neo-Nazi hitman. WTF, brain, how did you miss that?!

Night all.
