FICS! )

MEDIA )
I searched long and hard for fics that were genuinely scary. In honor of Hallowe'en tomorrow, and in acknowledgment of the shows basis in the dark, twisted and macabre, I present my last set of recs for the month.

[livejournal.com profile] buffyaddict13 wrote The Thin Ice.R. An average hunt turns deadly when a mysterious hunter kidnaps Sam and Dean, determined to exorcise a demon from Sam in order to "save" him. Sam and Dean insist Sam's not possessed but Libby doesn't believe them, and with good reason. Libby has proof Sam Winchester's a killer and she's not going to let him go. Written for Supernatural/JSquared Big Bang. -I didn't realize this was a Big Bang fic when I started and I'm glad I didn't. I would have hesitated, and this is one of the most compelling fics I've read. It was truly scary and amazingly detailed. It's also about an OFC, but please don't let that stop you. It's fantastic and the story ultimately is about the Supernatural world, and Sam and Dean's place in it.

[livejournal.com profile] mona1347 wrote Death's Other Kingdom. R. I wake up in Worcester with a sweating trucker on top of me. I'm cooing and writhing under him and I'm not the one doing it. I'm not the one moving my body. - This is disturbing, there is no denying it. But it looks at something the show often doesn't – consequences. What does it mean to be possessed? This fic spares no detail. Read with the lights on.

[livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter wrote Dealing With the Devil. PG13. I didn't read the summary before I read and I’m glad I didn't. I urge you to go in without reading the summary, too. But, just in case - SPOILERS FOR THE FIC ) Despite the fact that this is in second person, this I an absolutely incredible fic and the POV only heightens the impact at the reveal.

[livejournal.com profile] tru_faith_lost wrote Not as We. PG13. It's in God's hands now. Literally. Dean has his orders and as much proof as he'll ever need that he's got no choice but to follow them. In a way, he gets it. He gets what that means. In God's hands. He used to wonder what it was about those words that made people say them with that universal look of dreamy-eyed wonder. Now he knows. It is like dreaming. Just not in the way he would have thought. -What is it like, to be a real instrument of God?

[livejournal.com profile] apocalypsos wrote You Know Who You Are . PG13. Thoughts from a meat suit. - Ruby's victim.

[livejournal.com profile] leda_speaks wrote Mirror, Mirror . PG13. Mary, from "Bloody Mary." Your eyes, he told her. They're so lovely. - This episode freaked me out. This doesn't help.
For [livejournal.com profile] escritoireazul, who is having a rough time lately. I hope you enjoy these and haven't read them all already. :)

[livejournal.com profile] girl_wonder wrote And the hunter makes three. PG13. It was all about perspective. - Jo, dealing with what Sam did to her (even if it wasn't really Sam) and being generally awesome all the way around. Plus, a haunted house.

[livejournal.com profile] meyerlemon wrote And Find for Herself a Place of Rest . PG13. Feminist crankiness! - A Lilith origin story. Very good, very sad, very thought provoking. Beautifully done.

[livejournal.com profile] cupiscent wrote Don't Look Back . PG13. It's amazing how much your life can be shaped by one incident, and a little heavy knowledge. - Seri was the girl who was seeing things in her closet in the episode "Home". This is her story and its unbelievable. I want to be her when I grow up.

[livejournal.com profile] sevenfists wrote Soonest Mended . PG13. Jo. Dealing with the fallout, the best way she knows- head-on. - Jo want to be a Hunter, with all that it entails.

[livejournal.com profile] taxidryer wrote Bubonic . PG13. Why Ruby remembers; set in 1348. When everybody died around you, how could you figure which one was a loss and which one was just another casualty of the times? At what level of agony could one start taking it personally? - A Ruby origin story.
More Supernatural Gen Recs! Enjoy!

[livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka wrote A Fistful of Rain. PG. Five lives Dean Winchester didn't live. - These stories are not true, but the insights they give are very true. Touching and beautiful and, in a lot of cases, sad, the author reveals Dean in bits and pieces that eventually show us the Dean we know.

[livejournal.com profile] lyra_wing wrote There'll be peace when you are done. PG13. It sucks to know your fate. -This is a great fic that summarizes so much of Dean into a few words. It also holds up a pretty stark mirror to Sam, too.

[livejournal.com profile] pheebs1 wrote How I Will Change the World. PG13. Dean is forced to write the college application essay ‘How I Will Change the World’. - This is excellent Dean POV. Pre-series, but so very perfect.

[livejournal.com profile] autumn_lilacs wrote Warranty. PG. Impala POV, early S2 while Dean is fixing her back up. - This story is almost an outsider POV, but not quite. The Impala is as much of a main character as the boys. Beautifully done.

[livejournal.com profile] cofax7 wrote Warranty. PG. Bobby wouldn't call John Winchester's collection an archive. It's technically a miscellany; a random assortment of materials John's felt useful over the years. Most of it is material Bobby already has, anyway. But Bobby at least makes a habit of not tearing pages out of codexes in university libraries.. - These are brief snippets into Bobby's life, and through him, glimpses into the Winchesters. Really fantastic, with a touch of sadness.

[livejournal.com profile] poisontaster wrote An Early Afterlife of Ordinary Days (The Joy Luck Redux) . G. Jo climbs out of her car and leans back against the dust-filmed side to cover the trembling shakiness of her legs. It might help if they'd had more than a handful of angry, terse conversations in the past year, but they haven't. So there's her and her mom and enough stubborn between them to spawn a whole clan of mules. - I loved Ellen and Jo. This is what might have happened for them.

[livejournal.com profile] gigglingkat wrote Summer Camp . G. There were times when his seven year old son was mature beyond his years. This was not one of those times. John took it as encouragement. After a couple of rough years, Dean seemed to be coming out of his shell. He had made a friend in school. It was the first real connection that John could recall since Mary's death. It had opened up something in Dean that John was not going to let die without a fight. So when Marc's parents had mentioned the summer camp was still open, John enrolled Dean. He was slightly surprised by the reaction. - Funny and heartbreaking. John sends Den to summer camp. It goes about as would be expected.
Hi! I'm guest reccing this month at [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable and I have spent the last few days organizing the fics I want to rec. I'm not done yet, but I figured I'd get started with some gen recs from eras past. The earliest fics are pre-series and the last one is something that should still happen (imo). (Also, since it's October, the first one is a Halloween fic, too!)

Enjoy and don't forget to feedback the author!

[livejournal.com profile] vorpalblades wrote Art Imitating. PG-13. Sammy has to tell his class a scary story, so he tells them about one of John's jobs. -This is a rare, truly funny fic. Sam has to break rule 1 – never talk about the family business. He does so in typical Sam fashion, with Dean cheering from the sides.

[livejournal.com profile] eloise_bright wrote Whipping Boy. PG13. Pastor Jim considers John Winchesters parenting methods – and hopes there is a method. -This is not a nice look at John Winchester, but it's probably an accurate one.

[livejournal.com profile] jainadurron wrote Salt of the Earth. PG. Dean and Sam pursue a demon in Utah. - This is set after season 2 and perfectly catches the mood of that time period, before the boys became pawns in a much bigger war and when they just cared about keeping each other safe.

[livejournal.com profile] spastic_visions wrote Long Time Coming. PG. For a long time, all you can see is white. - Henrickson after the explosion, if he hadn't died. This is a great fic and one that I keep hoping will become canon. The second person works perfectly, because Henrickson is coaching himself.

[livejournal.com profile] debbiel66 wrote Off the Map. PG. Post Season 4: Injured and on the run, Dean and Sam encounter a town that is nothing like anything they've ever encountered. - This is a very unusual look at the boys and the message in it was soothing and hopeful. I enjoyed this a great deal, despite the fact that it was more of a healing than an ass kicking fic. The boys could use some more healing.

PS - For new folks to my LJ - hi! Also, I have every fic I've ever recced in my memories sorted by fandom and labeled with author, title, rating. Please check them out!

Word Count: ~33,000
Characters: Dean Winchester and Remy LeBeau

Summary: Thirty-five minutes. That's all Dean needed for this job. As long as everything went according to plan, of course.

But this is New Orleans, and nothing ever goes to plan. When Dean is interrupted mid-job by a stranger who strongly resembles a demon, the Plan is blown to hell and back. Author’s Notes: I owe a lot of thanks for this story. First, this story was written for [livejournal.com profile] windiain. I hope you enjoy it! Secondly, this story would never have made it this far if it weren't for the help and encouragement of [livejournal.com profile] catwomyn5 and [livejournal.com profile] pdantzler2. Lastly, I must give all thanks and praise to my wonderful beta readers [livejournal.com profile] escritoireazul and [livejournal.com profile] dramady. They have made this story much better than it was.

I must also thank [livejournal.com profile] la_conquistador, whose artwork provided me with the inspiration I needed to get over the last few hurdles.

For those who think this looks familiar, I started posting it some months back, then realized I had a much bigger story here. I've rewritten the entire fic, and suggest that you consider starting at the beginning. Thanks to those who encouraged me!

Crossover Recs

[livejournal.com profile] catslash wrote Old Road. Supernatural/Watchmen, PG13. Two of the defining moments of John Winchester's life come to him courtesy of the same man.

I clicked on this because I was interested in a fic with John Winchester and the Comedian, given that both are played by the same actor, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I wasn't expecting much - but even if I'd been expecting excellent, I'd have been blown away. I was impressed beyond the telling and have spent not an small amount of time pondering things about Viet Nam, the nature of family, and the ways that a total bastard (the Comedian) might have actually done good in the world.

[livejournal.com profile] avamclean wrote Here Be Dragons. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles/Buffy the Vampire Slayer, FR15. They were found in a dark corner of Century, hidden away by the metal, and left for rot. They were darkness. They were death. They were dragons.

This particular crossover is astonishingly common, but that's because it works so well. I do not often find BtVS fics that I love, but this one has come to mind so many times since I've read it. It's chillingly well done.

[livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet wrote And Away We Go. Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Bandom (Fall Out Boy), PG. "Dear Pete," he writes after filling in the age verification page, thereby confirming that he is far too old to be doing this. "Hi. Please stop being such a whiny emo bastard in public on the world wide web. I dont care what you do in private with your friends or family, but I live with fifteen teenage girls and they have all of your blogs bookmarked. I dont know if you know this, but living with fifteen teenage girls is not anything resembling fun. And when theyre all crying because youre sad its even less fun. Ive tried to use parental block software so they cant get to your blogs, but theyre strong girls and Ive got a limited field of vision. Please, for the sake of my sanity and physical wellbeing... just stop. PLEASE!"

Because, even if you don't get into Bandom, which I don't, this is just funny. *grins*

[livejournal.com profile] penknife wrote Curiosities. X-men Comicverse/Harry Potter, PG13. Tom Riddle meets Erik Lehnsherr, circa 1950. It's an educational evening for them both.

I really like crossovers between X-men and Harry Potter. Mutants and wizards, so alike, and yet so very different. This fic explores some of the similarities, and shows some startling conclusions.

[livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha wrote Parlor Games. Torchwood/Firefly, PG13. “Captain Jack Harkness,” the dark-haired man proclaimed cheerfully, grasping Jayne’s hand and shaking it with almost obscene warmth, in Jayne’s opinion. “Welcome to Torchwood Seventeen. You must be Jayne Cobb.”

This is crack done so well that it ceases to be crack and instead becomes a delightful what-if. It's not long enough to be epic, but the premise is certainly epic. Plus, who doesn't want to see Jayne and Jack match snarky wits?

Okay, this is the first set of recs for April. My plan is to rec at least 30 different things over the month, and this is the first five. I hope you all enjoy them! If you do, please let the author know.

Cheers!
Well, I know who I'm calling if the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, Future or otherwise show up at my house!

A few notes:

1. Some of the links lead to off LJ sites.
2. Each reader is responsible for double checking warnings on the story itself. It is not my job, nor the job of anyone else, to make sure you’re aware of the contents of the story.
3. I encourage you all to leave feedback for the authors! Feed the authors and they will continue to feed us.
4. This would not have happened if it were not for the generous help of many, many people. In particular, I would like to thank [livejournal.com profile] musesinspire for making the lovely banner above and for coding the recs list. You are a star! Also, I understand that [livejournal.com profile] dhark_charlotte came to the coding rescue. Many, many thanks to you as well!
5. If you encounter any mistakes, please drop me a note in the comments and I’ll do my best to fix it quickly.
6. Lastly, feel free to squee in the comments if you’re so inclined.

On a personal note, today is the last day of the Recathon! Thanks to everyone who participated. Congrats to the authors who were recced. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

And now for the recs!

Crossovers )
Since I'm useless at work today anyway, I figured I'd speed the time along by giving you guys a set of crossover recs. It's likely going to be a big list. Enjoy! And if you do enjoy, please let the author know.

**************

Good Omens/Supernatural: [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis wrote A Backdoor to Hell . PG. It's not the strangest request Aziraphale's heard, but it surprises him nonetheless. (Comment: This one was fun and even has footnotes!)

Supernatural/DCU: [livejournal.com profile] dotfic wrote Then You'd Better Not Stay. PG-13. Dean Winchester/Wonder Woman. He's a hunter. She's an Amazon princess. Together, they slay dragons! (Comment: Awesome fic, awesome premise, awesome pairing. What's not to love here?)

Supernatural/Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: [livejournal.com profile] chaletian wrote Judgement Day. Gen. Dean and Sam didn't expect the apocalypse. (Comment: Short, sweet and to the point, this fusion is fantastic!)

Firefly/Terminator movies: [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess wrote Our Passenger. R. A mysterious dangerous woman boards Serenity.(Comment: I was skeptical of the premise until I started reading. I'm so glad I started reading. This was fantastic.)

Harry Potter/X-men Movierverse: [livejournal.com profile] penknife wrote Stutter. Gen, Lily & Sirius, Charles/Erik (implied). It's a rough flight. (Comment: I love this fic more than I can coherently put into words, more for what isn't said than for what is. It's a brilliant crossover that puts these two worlds together in a way that will leave you wishing for more.)

Harry Potter/Doctor Who: [livejournal.com profile] fly_to_dawn wrote Redheads and Dragon’s Eggs. PG. Now that’s a real mystery,’ she said, ‘it must have been four or five years ago - a stranger left it to my mum, as a gift for me to keep. (Comment: Donna! Charlie! Dragons! Win!)

Harry Potter/Doctor Who: [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina wrote You Can Never Go Home Again. PG. On the other side of the Veil, Sirius can't help his friends, but he can help someone else's. (Comment: I want this to be canon for both fandoms, please. Please? I'll beg.)

Doctor Who/Torchwood/Iron Man: [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina wrote Never Have I Ever. PG. Ianto, Donna and Pepper end up at a secretaries'/assistants' conference and have a conversation about their bosses (Comment: Everyone's favorite assistants dish the real truth! Aided by booze. Heee!)

Bandom (My Chemical Romance and Cobra Starship)/Shaun of the Dead: [livejournal.com profile] akire_yta wrote With Just A Touch of My Burning Hand. G. This is sort of an obscure cross-over with the film 'Shaun of the Dead,' and is based off a passing comment in one of the closing scenes. Multimedia. (Comment: Just go and check this out. It's too funny to miss!)

Primeval/Jurassic Park III: [livejournal.com profile] cordeliadelayne wrote Visitors. PG. When a T.Rex goes on a rampage in the ARC, who better to help, than two people who have survived a dinosaur infested island? (Comment: This fic has dinosaurs. And it's also made of awesome. Go and see for yourself!)
I've recced some of these before, but I put this post together for [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable, so I thought I'd share here. And the last three are new recs for my journal! Enjoy!

Fiction

Conversational Winchester for Trolls by [livejournal.com profile] eloise_bright (PG-13; Gen; 1,850 words)
Pre-series. Crack!fic, but in the best possible connotation. What do the Winchester men mean when they speak? The troll under the bridge figures it out.

He Never Said Why by [livejournal.com profile] meredevachon (PG; ~ 550 words)
Bobby fic. Written early in the show, this stands the test of time and provides a possible glimpsed explanation for why Bobby is such a devoted friend.

On Warm Summer Nights by [livejournal.com profile] lyra_wing (PG; ~ 4,000 words)
Mary-centric fic. This one is lush and rich and beautiful. It gave me goosebumps the first time I read it and still gives me goosebumps to this day when I reread it. To say more would spoil it.

We Say Grace, We Say Ma'am by [livejournal.com profile] kimonkey7 (PG; ~ 3,200 words)
Teen-chesters. It’s hard to be idealistic when you’re 19 years old. Even harder when you live in a trailer park. Almost impossible when your dad is John Winchester. But...

Just Another Kid by [livejournal.com profile] bad_peppermint (PG; 4,233 words)
Coach Grant was well aware that school policy demanded he check up on the Winchester kid, but that didn’t mean he was eager to go. Outsider's POV, Teen!chesters (I *love* outsider POV fic when it's done well, and it simply doesn't get done better than this!)

Four Months by [livejournal.com profile] zerawolfe7 (PG; < 1,000 words)
It was four months of Hell for Dean. But was he the only one in Hell?

Things hoped for by [livejournal.com profile] oxoniensis (PG; < 1,808 words)
"Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities though not beheld." (Hebrews 11:1) (This one is too good to miss! It's got angsty Sam and angsty Dean and fear for the future and fear of the past and fear of angels. It's flail worthy.

Long Time Coming by [livejournal.com profile] spastic_visions (PG; < 1,791 words)
What if Victor Henriksen survived, what sort of man would he now become? From [livejournal.com profile] spnremixfics.
I'm doing a months of recs over at [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable. I figured I'd share them here, too. :)

This post thread is all about my new obsession: Castiel! There are obviously spoilers for the episodes this season. Read with caution!

Fiction

Chosen by [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight (Unrated; Gen; ~1,000 words)
Lyrical and haunting, this fic is a look at what Castiel is, his mission, and his limitations in accomplishing it.

in the dying of the year by [livejournal.com profile] tigriswolf (PGish; Gen; 666words)
Castiel must make a choice between who he is, what he wants, and what he is told to do. He can only hope he makes the right one.

The Narrow Path by [livejournal.com profile] regann (PG; Castiel/Dean; ~1500 words)
Castiel copes with demons, doubt and Dean in the name of his mission. This is the story of temptation.

"Once was Blind, Now I See…" by [livejournal.com profile] angelstart (R; Gen; ~1,000 words)
She had known one day that her ability would change her life. She never dreamed that it would help the world and make her one of the few that knew the truth. Very vaguely Pamela/Castiel, but a fascinating look at what happens to those who have seen Castiel.

The Persistence of Memory by [livejournal.com profile] jenniebellie (PG; GEN; <500 words)
Castiel remembers...simple as that. What is it like to be more than human, but trapped in a human body?

Fanmix

You Are My Religion: A Dean/Castiel fanmix by [livejournal.com profile] roguedemonhunte
Complete with album covers and art.

All Too Much [a Dean/Castiel Mix] by [livejournal.com profile] skypipe
Complete with album covers and art.
Well, I had vague thoughts that I'd read all the stories and then make one recs post with all my favorites in them. Then, I started reading... and there are too many good stories for me to fit them all into one post! So, here goes part one of a two part series of recs. :)

************

Burn Notice

[livejournal.com profile] penmage wrote What You're Thinking While the World is Ending. PG-13. First things first, this was written for me, so I am naturally biased. But, that said, this would be high high on my list regardless. It is *awesome*! The POV is second person, which I can't write to save my life, but it works so fantastically for this piece that it's like watching an episode of the show. It's absolutely incredible, and I'm convinced you'll love it as much as I did if you read it.

[livejournal.com profile] lyl_devil wrote Life After. R. I can't even put into words how fantastic this fic is. It's pitch perfect for all the characters, has a riveting plot, a fantastic villian, and Michael is a ruthless and amazing as he really is. Plus, Fiona. Oh, man. Fiona! Gah. That's all I can say about her without devolving into a fangirl. A quick summary: With the government in ruins, Michael's skills are in demand again, despite the burn notice.

Psych

[livejournal.com profile] storydivagirl wrote The Four Stages of the Psych Zombie Attack. PG. This fic has it all. It has Shawn. And Gus. And Henry! Not to mention zombies and squabbles and laugh out loud humor. It's a true gem of a fic in a fandom without enough fic to begin with!

[livejournal.com profile] gryvon wrote The Four Stages of the Psych Zombie Attack. R. I am not generally a fan of Shawn/Lassiter fics. This one has gone a long way to making me reconsider. The portrayal of Lassiter in this fic, through Shawn's eyes, made me look at the detective again myself. It's sweet and bittersweet, and very nicely done.

Supernatural/X-men

[livejournal.com profile] nekare wrote Migratory Birds. PG-13. Epic. That's the only way I can think to describe this fic. It picks up at the end of X-3, is basically an AU for all of Supernatural, and is so good it hurts. I am utterly blown away by the detail and world crafting, the ease and skill applied to this crossover, and the intensity and depth of the plot. In a word, this fic is fantastic. Told from the Winchesters' POV, it's a tale of brothers who end up on opposites sides in the mutant v. human war, and the realization that sometimes family, however it's defined, matters more than anything else. Plus, the other characters that appear, X-men and Supernatural both, are just superbly written.

X-men

[livejournal.com profile] danniisupernova wrote Anumarana. PG-13. Beautiful and bleak. This isn't a request that I asked for, but it's similar to one that I asked for. What happens if Magneto wins? Haunting and heartbreaking. Told from Pyro's POV, it's his deconstruction from god to insect again.

[livejournal.com profile] resolute wrote World's End, In Ice. PG. This was a seriously creepy fic, in a very understated way that will crawl through your thoughts when you're trying to sleep. It's [livejournal.com profile] resolute, so you already know it's quality story-telling, but I was very impressed by the story she didn't tell here, as well.

As always, if you read something you enjoy, please let the author know! Thanks!
