A/N: It's been a while since I saw the episode this is based off of, but I hope that this at least hits on some of what you were hoping for. It's not as big on the comfort as I think you probably wanted, but... sorry! *lol* It's what came to mind. I might try something else later, since this is such a good request!

The box was lowered slowly into the ground and Kara felt her control start to slip. Gods, she hated crying. Even when… especially when tears were so richly deserved. She looked at the two men on either side of her, taking silent strength from them.

Both men wore expressions carved of despair and sadness, but neither seemed as close to crumbling into a tiny heap of sobbing nothingness as she felt. Honestly, if she was willing to think about them, she might have thought that they were competing, each determined not fold before the other.

The Priest was muttering words of solace and comfort, empty words that didn’t have the tangibility or the solid comfort of the man whose life she had shared just a few days ago. A man who had become her life… her family… her home.

A softly shuttered breath beside drew here attention away from the Priest in front of her and over towards Lee. She was surprised to find that even given the circumstances, she was still happy to see him. They had been friends, once. Good friends. But, he had deliberately gotten as far away from his Old Man as he could.

Lee had never gotten along with his Old Man. Zak on the other hand… Zak had idolized his father. And Lee and Adama had both idolized Zak. She had always been able to tell that when Lee had spoken about Zak in Flight School. She used to tease him that no one could be as perfect as the amazing, brilliant, funny Zak Adama.

But he had been. And now he was gone. Hearing a noise, she looked back at the ending unfolding in front of her. She was alone now. Alone again. Maybe she was destined to be alone forever.

The soldiers lined up along the walkway snapped to attention at some unseen signal. Her eyes never left the ground as the dirt was shoveled on top of her beloved. The guns fired unanimously, saluting their fallen brother, but the echo of gun shots were drowned out by the whisper of grains of sand landing on the top of the coffin.

Unable to hide her grief any longer, she gave in to the tears that were threatening. She was startled to feel a hand squeeze her own, and glancing down, she was even more startled to find that it was Adama’s hand, not Lee’s.

She met his eyes briefly and then the ceremony was over. He walked away, leading the procession as was his right by rank, and by his relationship with the deceased. Lee outranked her as well, but he did not leave her side as they made they’re way away from Zak’s grave.

She was alone again. Lee’s hand found hers this time and she held it. He didn’t say anything and neither did she. She simply accepted the strength that he offered her and gave back what strength she could spare.

He would only be here for a few days before he left again, she knew. She would be leaving too. She had already put in her request for a transfer. She couldn’t teach basic flight anymore… she needed a chance to escape this place, where her memories would haunt her for the rest of her life. She wanted a chance to expand her wings… but that would come later.

Right now, she just needed someone to understand what it was like to have the world come to an end. Lee’s hand was warm, familiar, comfortable. He would leave in a few days, but she knew he understood.

That helped.
