A/N: My brain came up with a bunny and it went a little haywire from there. Not quite what I'd intended, but time is running out, so I hope it entertains! Drabblish and short. For June!Challenge Day 13.
"For God so loved the world, he sent his only begotten son..." Akito whispered the words into the darkness and felt the body held in her arms twist in surprise. "But you're not my only begotten son, are you, Shigure?" The god of legend practically purred the last sentence into Shigure's ear. "You're one of twelve children, one of many sons..."
Shigure stiffened and tried to pull away. "Akito, why do you say such things to hurt me?" For once, caught in such an intimate position unawares, Shigure was not ready with a quip to cover his hurt or his anger. "I'm the only one who loves you this way."
Akito smiled, cruelty curling her lips as she studied his pained expression. "Trying to give me puppy dog eyes won't work, Shigure." She reached out and tapped him on the nose. "Bad puppy."
Shigure rolled away and stood, moonlight from the window illuminating his nakedness. "Why do you want to hurt me when I love you so much?" His voice was ragged.
"I don't want your love now, Shigure." Akito stood as well, her body weak under the strains of the curse, but feeding off of his nearness, his neediness.
"What do you want?" Shigure demanded, almost pleading.
"I want you to worship me the way a god deserves to be worshiped."
"I do worship you, Akito." Shigure fell to his knees and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close and burying his face in her stomach. "I want only to make you happy. Let me make you happy..."
"Would you worship me, Shigure?" Akito's voice was wistful and she trailed her fingers through his hair.
"Yes..." Shigure groaned against her belly, his lips trailing over the flesh there.
"Do you believe in me?" Her whisper sent shivers up and down Shigure's spine, but he was helpless to stop his nod.
"Would you die for me, my son? As the Christian god's son died? Would you take that burden from me?"
Shigure froze, unable to move, unable to speak. "You don't love me that much." Akito's voice was flat now, hard. "You love only yourself that much, is that not right, Shigure?"
"I love you, Akito..." Shigure's voice was broken, but he could not look up at her, nor could he avoid the slap she aimed at his head, rocking him backwards on his heels.
"You love me for what you think it gives you, Shigure. But it gives you nothing more than the status of a family dog, obedient to its master." Akito's fingers gently traced the rising wheals on his face, and Shigure hated himself a bit for the way that he leaned into her gentle caress.
"This is why you will never be my favorite son." Akito thrust him away from her and moved back to the bed. "You stay because you hope that you will benefit. Others stay of their own free will."
"He will never love you as I do."
Akito lay down again and turned to study him, where he still knelt in front of the window. "Perhaps not. Now be a good dog and come to bed."
His self-hatred growing with every step, Shigure obeyed. "I love you. I believe in you Akito. I do."
"I know. But I don't believe in you, Shigure. For whosever believeth in him, shall not perish but have life eternal." She finished quoting the scripture, and pulled his head down to rest on her breast. "You are not that son. Now sleep."
With nothing left to say in his defense, Shigure closed his eyes and obeyed the instructions of his god.
