Brand hung up her communicator with a sigh and stared down at the piles of paperwork on the desk in front of her in a mixture of mild annoyance and exhausted despair. Flicking her eyes to the left, she saw the time marching steadily towards midnight and gritted her teeth in response. There were days when then there just wasn’t enough time.

Hell, there were no days when there was enough time.

A knock at the door interrupted her reach for the top piece of paper and she turned as the metal slid open. Only two people would have the audacity to enter her office without her permission and her assistant was off duty. Besides, she’d noted the shuttle docking an hour before, unexpected, cleared past security without problem, and narrowed the list of possible arrivals to a select few.

One of them was staring in at her now and she leaned back in her chair. A familiar blue face and feline grin greeted her and she kept face expressionless. “I thought you were up to your ears in catastrophes.”

“I am,” Hank replied.

“I thought you were too busy to keep our date,” Brand arched an eyebrow.

“No, my dear. I said I was too busy to be timely with our date.” Hank stepped into the room, hands holding a peace offering.

Standing, Brand’s eyes locked on the box. “Is that Mario’s?”

“Cheese, pepperoni, mushroom, olives…” Hank answered, temptingly. He lifted his other hand. “And a six pack of beer that I liberated from Logan.”

“You’re forgiven for being late.” Brand circled her desk arms held out. As soon as she was close enough, she took the pizza box and turned on her heel, ignoring the offered hug. She’d made it two steps before she hid her grin, ducking her face, as he snatched her back against him.

“Then just wait to see what I have for dessert,” he promised, teasingly. Relaxing for a moment, Brand leaned against him, the warmth of him seeping through her uniform and easing tense muscles. Turning, she lifted her face to kiss him.

“I can’t wait.”

Imperfect Contrition (the Skeletons in the Closet Remix)

************

So, this is my remix fic. I can honestly say that I am ridiculously pleased with how well received it was and pretty happy at how it came out.

I have thoughts on remixing, that I would love to share, but I am running full out at the moment trying to keep up with my life, so I will have to remember to come back and share them at a later date.

Thanks so much!
Later than I promised, but for your enjoyment nonetheless. :)

Crossover Recs

[livejournal.com profile] catslash wrote Old Road. Supernatural/Watchmen, PG13. Two of the defining moments of John Winchester's life come to him courtesy of the same man.

I clicked on this because I was interested in a fic with John Winchester and the Comedian, given that both are played by the same actor, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I wasn't expecting much - but even if I'd been expecting excellent, I'd have been blown away. I was impressed beyond the telling and have spent not an small amount of time pondering things about Viet Nam, the nature of family, and the ways that a total bastard (the Comedian) might have actually done good in the world.

[livejournal.com profile] avamclean wrote Here Be Dragons. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles/Buffy the Vampire Slayer, FR15. They were found in a dark corner of Century, hidden away by the metal, and left for rot. They were darkness. They were death. They were dragons.

This particular crossover is astonishingly common, but that's because it works so well. I do not often find BtVS fics that I love, but this one has come to mind so many times since I've read it. It's chillingly well done.

[livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet wrote And Away We Go. Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Bandom (Fall Out Boy), PG. "Dear Pete," he writes after filling in the age verification page, thereby confirming that he is far too old to be doing this. "Hi. Please stop being such a whiny emo bastard in public on the world wide web. I dont care what you do in private with your friends or family, but I live with fifteen teenage girls and they have all of your blogs bookmarked. I dont know if you know this, but living with fifteen teenage girls is not anything resembling fun. And when theyre all crying because youre sad its even less fun. Ive tried to use parental block software so they cant get to your blogs, but theyre strong girls and Ive got a limited field of vision. Please, for the sake of my sanity and physical wellbeing... just stop. PLEASE!"

Because, even if you don't get into Bandom, which I don't, this is just funny. *grins*

[livejournal.com profile] penknife wrote Curiosities. X-men Comicverse/Harry Potter, PG13. Tom Riddle meets Erik Lehnsherr, circa 1950. It's an educational evening for them both.

I really like crossovers between X-men and Harry Potter. Mutants and wizards, so alike, and yet so very different. This fic explores some of the similarities, and shows some startling conclusions.

[livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha wrote Parlor Games. Torchwood/Firefly, PG13. “Captain Jack Harkness,” the dark-haired man proclaimed cheerfully, grasping Jayne’s hand and shaking it with almost obscene warmth, in Jayne’s opinion. “Welcome to Torchwood Seventeen. You must be Jayne Cobb.”

This is crack done so well that it ceases to be crack and instead becomes a delightful what-if. It's not long enough to be epic, but the premise is certainly epic. Plus, who doesn't want to see Jayne and Jack match snarky wits?

Okay, this is the first set of recs for April. My plan is to rec at least 30 different things over the month, and this is the first five. I hope you all enjoy them! If you do, please let the author know.

Cheers!
I found this interview fascinating and wanted to share my addiction interest with anyone so inclined. :)
Some X-Men Recs, as requested by the flist. :)

Confessional by [livejournal.com profile] musamea. Adult. Scott/Emma. Background Scott/Jean. - I love Emma and the more I read fic about her, the more I love her. This fic is brilliant because it shows just how raw Scott/Emma can be - both are intelligent, and both have the ability to be more than just a little vicious when they want to be. And there is poetry!

on the road with disposable comestibles by [livejournal.com profile] escritoireazul. Rating 13+. Bobby and Hank and a roadtrip for twinkies. What could be better? This is a movieverse fic set pre-X3 (written pre-X3 as well) and it's a beautiful look at growing and learning and friendship in the most difficult of times.

Going Nowhere by [livejournal.com profile] wal_lace. G. X-men First Class - Bobby, Hank and Warren. Road trips. Parenthetical statements. Hysterical fic well worth the read.

He's My Friend. He's My Alibi. by [livejournal.com profile] asitiswhenitwas. T. Author's summary: Scott and Warren aren’t agreeing on many things. They can’t even agree if this is or isn’t a mission. Either way; Road trip! This is funny. Very funny. Scott has a sense of humor and it's really quite wickedly funny!

20 Things You Might Not Know About Scott Summers by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce. Unrated. This is a beautiful and poignant look at Scott Summers. Comic verse (or pre-X3), this looks at the character and digs out all the things that make him real and human.

Okay! If you enjoy these, please let the author know. And let me know so I know what to keep an eye out for!
What sort of coffee would Scott order at a coffee house? Assuming he's a "hip young teen"? What about Warren?

Yes, I *am* working on an Xmen First Class fic. *lol*

Thanks!

:D
Hi, flist! Sorry to be spammy today, but I just got sucked into Astonishing Xmen. I find, to my delight and surprise, that I love all things Astonishing, thus far. (I only wish it had Iceman in it. Beast + Iceman = Made of Win.)

But, I love Emma Frost. She's such an amusing bitch. And her and Kitty Pride crack me up. (Logan: I thought I was the one with the claws.)

[Really, all credit goes to Joss Whedon for this one. I can see his thumb prints all over this series. And, well... Joss is my master for a reason. ;) ]

I also love the whole Nick Fury and Scott Summers tension. I really wanted Scott to kick his ass.

So... can anyone give me any good recs for this particular series? I'm still pretty new into it, but I don't mind spoilers so much. :)

Please and thanks!
Hey guys! It was a close race, but the two winners for this week were X-men and Firefly.

I'll keep doing weekly recs, now, so eventually I'll get to everything. And so many good things are being written, that it's hard not to keep finding the good stuff!

Anyway, onward for some ficcy goodness! X-men in this post, Firefly in the next one. :D

X-Men Recs

The Second Angel by [livejournal.com profile] vagabond_sal. - This fic was written as a challenge when that horrible movie The Day After Tomorrow came out. And who am I kidding. I love disaster movies! It took the premise of the film and merged it with X-men (making it not a true crossover, I don't think... thoughts on that?). The second ice age cometh and Bobby Drake aka Iceman will find out better than anyone what surviving in the face of disaster will mean.

Bobby had eyes and eyes further still underneath those, and with his secret sight he could see the paths of electrons all around them as they slowed and stilled on their axes. This wasn't going to go away.

Nameless by [livejournal.com profile] c_elisa. - This is an absolutely heartbreaking look at Xavier through the eyes of an unnamed OC, but it works so beautifully that it gave me chills when I reread it to rec it. Sometimes, knowing the name of something helps, and sometimes it just makes things more confusing. This is a gen fic, but there is a strong Charles/Erik background.

Acts of God by [livejournal.com profile] phoenixchilde. - This is an AU ending of X2, supposing that Jean wasn't the one to sacrifice herself to save the others. There was another with that capability... (Yes, I have a serious fixation with Iceman. Shut up.) Best be prepared to have kleenex for this one.

Against the Dying of the Light by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls. - This is a mesmerizing look at a vastly underutilized character in the movies - Colossus. This is brilliant, I was very impressed. It looks at the X-men we know and love who made appearances and then vanished from the movies - and explians what they were doing.

Finally, but not least for my X-men Recs, a recent one from the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest fics. Chemistry, Romance, and the Alchemy Thereof by [livejournal.com profile] neotoma. Written for the prompt: X-Men Comicsverse: Hank McCoy. Hank McCoy once told the world he was gay in a publicity stunt. What was the public reaction? Did he ever recant? What was the reaction then? (You can play it as the implicit New X-Men canon - that he's actually straight - but if so I'd like to see the reactions of gay characters. Or you can say he was actually telling the truth all along.)

That sums up the plot, and all I can add to that is that this was unbelievably well done. It takes a complicated and sensitive topic, which was butchered by Marvel (but are we surprised?) and explores it with compassion and insight. Truly a fantastic story.

Let me know if you enjoyed any of the recs, okay? That way I know what I can keep an eye out for things I think you guys will enjoy. :)
