As soon as Matt heard the footsteps outside his room he knew who was coming through his door in a moment. Sure enough, the door banged open, crashing and rebounding off the wall. Mello caught it before it could shut in his face and raged into the room.
"I will beat him, if it's the last thing I do!"
Matt didn't have to ask who the "him" was that had upset Mello. It was always the same "him." Near.
"I know you will." Matt replied, careful not to turn his back on Mello when Mello was in this mood. Mello stared at Matt for a moment, his chest heaving with exertion, the he smiled. "That's what I like about you, Matt. You know the truth when you see it."
**********
The oddest thing about Mello's anger towards Near was how rarely he displayed it to the other boy. At least, that was what Matt thought as he watched the two rivals exchange curt greetings over the breakfast table the next morning. He had done what Mello had asked - though with actions and not words - and put his own tray down next to Near, giving Mello the excuse he needed to sit with them as well.
"Good morning," Near greeted them both, not looking up from his plate. Matt was amused to note that the white haired boy appeared to be playing out a siege with his bacon and eggs.
Mello grunted, his attention torn between his own breakfast and the book he was reading in preparation for class in the afternoon. Matt shrugged. "It's morning, good or not. It's what we've got."
"True." Near glanced up at Matt, his gaze steady. "Make the best of what we have, right?"
Matt was struck by the odd sense that Near wasn't talking to him about the weather and he nodded, suddenly cautious of rousing Mello's temper. Mello shot Matt a glance then stood up almost as suddenly as he'd sat down. "Watch out for the toast." He left in a maelstrom of movement, the same way he always moved around, leaving Matt to stare at Near's breakfast in confusion.
Near smiled slightly, and reached out to push the toast to the side. "It presented an opportunity for flanking," he explained even though Matt hadn't asked. Matt suddenly wondered if Mello thought of him as so much toast.
**********
When Mello's restraint finally snapped, Matt was the one who stepped between him and Near. The punch that was intended for the smaller boy landed on Matt's cheek instead, and Mello stared at him shocked.
"Matt! I didn't mean..."
"It was an accident," Matt lied calmly, even though there was no possible way that the blow had been anything other than intentional. "Don't worry about it."
Mello turned and left without another word.
"Thank you," Near's voice was unperturbed, as if he didn't mind the fact that he'd come very close to being pummeled.
"I didn't do it for you." Matt's answer wasn't angry or resentful. He was simply stating the truth.
"I know." Near surprised Matt by catching his arm and forcing the taller boy to turn towards him. Reaching up, the smaller boy trailed his fingers over the bruise forming on Matt's cheek. "We make do with what we have, right?"
Matt shivered, but he didn't move away. "I'm not toast."
"No." Near agreed. "You're not." He didn't say anything else, and Matt refused to read the message in the smaller boy's eyes.
**********
As soon as Matt heard the footsteps outside his room he knew who was coming through his door. This time, though, the door opened slowly, cautiously, as if the boy on the other side suddenly wasn't sure of his welcome. Mello stood in the doorway and stared at Matt in silence.
Matt twisted in his chair so that he could see the blonde boy more clearly. The bruise on his face had blossomed into spectacular colors and he could see Mello looking at it with something that might have been sadness or regret.
"It was an accident." Matt repeated his reassurance from earlier. "You wouldn't hurt me, not on purpose. I know that."
Mello ghosted into the room, coming to a stop in front of Matt's chair. Reaching out, the blonde gently touched Matt's cheek, repeating the caress that Near had given him earlier. Matt shivered. Mello smiled.
"That's what I like about you, Matt. You know the truth when you see it."

Date: 2008-06-24 07:22 pm (UTC)Mm, I'm not as familiar with the Near and Mello arc of Death Note (simply wasn't that interesting to me), but this is intriguing.

Date: 2008-06-24 07:27 pm (UTC)Thanks!
And I'm more of a fan of the L and Light sections, personally, but the latter half of Death Note is growing on me. I'm glad you read this anyway. And thanks for the catch!

Date: 2008-06-24 08:37 pm (UTC)Your characterization = Amazing. Even though I'm not into the trio so much, you managed to capture who they are (even though we didn't all get that much in depth info on them XP), and yeah, I just adored it~
L & Light will always be my favourite though~ XD
Keep up the wonderful writing my dear!! <3333

Date: 2008-06-25 08:26 pm (UTC)I was thinking about the fact that I'm not sure I've written more than a drabble from Mello's pov before... *shakes head* He's tricky to figure out, that one!
But, I really do like Matt. ;)
