It hurt to be dismissed as nothing more than a nice piece of ass in a suit, but Pepper Potts always smiled an “eat shit” smile and more often than not came up with a comment that put the other person in their place.
She knew who she was. She was Virginia Potts, Pepper to her friends, Ms. Potts to Tony when he was being caustic, and Bitch Extraordinaire to those who crossed her. She was the glue that held Stark Industries together, always making sure the important paperwork was signed, copied and filed.
She was a secretary. She was a personal assistant. She was an executive administrator. She was a crisis councilor. She was a task master. She was a babysitter.
She was all of those things for Tony Stark.
So, yes, it hurt when one of Tony’s associates, or bedmates, would judge her to be nothing more than a glorified file clerk.
None of those duties were what kept her with Tony, though.
Underneath the glitz and the glamour and the womanizing, she truly thought that Tony was a good man. And a lonely man. And she genuinely liked him.
Hearing from Rhodey that Tony had been taken while in Afghanistan hadn’t hurt. It had nearly killed her.
Pepper’s fingers shook and the only way she could keep from crying was to hold her breath as she listened to Rhodes ramble on something about humvees and terrorists. The only words that mattered, the ones she focused on and couldn’t forget, were about Tony.
“Tony’s been taken hostage. We don’t know where he is. We don’t know why.”
“Rhodey.” Pepper focused every bit of her inner bitch. “You find him, Rhodey. Do you hear me? You find him and you bring him back.”
“Pepper.”
“Unless you’re going to say you hear and understand, stop talking.”
There was a pause. “You could have been a general in the military, Pepper.”
“I know. But instead I work for Tony Stark.” She swallowed. “And I don’t want another job.”
“I’ll find him, Pepper.” Rhodes promised and Pepper relaxed slightly. She believed Rhodes would do it, if it were possible to do.
While Tony was lost, Pepper did her job. She kept Stark Industries going, confident that eventually Tony would come home and want his business back. She wasn’t a power in her own right, but she knew everything that Tony knew about the business and when there were questions she had answers.
Fewer people were brazen enough to suggest that Pepper’s assets were kept in her skirt after that. Tony’s business associates treated her with respect. There were no women to escort from the house in the morning while Tony hid in the basement.
Pepper had never been in more anguish in her life.
Then the day came that Rhodes called her again.
“We’ve got him, Pepper. Tony is coming home.”
Fingers shaking, Pepper held her breath to keep from crying. Sitting down abruptly, she smiled.
“Thank you, Rhodes.”
“Don’t thank me. You know Tony, he got himself out of that mess.”
“Yes, I do know Tony.” Pepper agreed. “But thank you anyway. I really didn’t want to have to find a new job.”

She was all of those things for Tony Stark.
But mostly, she was his friend.
