Bobby laughed, and John clapped a hand over his mouth. “You’re not supposed to make noise!” he hissed.
“You really think the Professor doesn’t know we snuck out?” Bobby mumbled through John’s fingers.
“I don’t want to find out!” The other boy replied, amused. “They have better parties in town than we do here and I’d like to keep going!”
Bobby nodded, giving John a boost as they climbed back into their window as the sun rose. He wouldn’t tell him, but John had been right. It had felt good to get out and cut loose for a little while.

Perhaps it was that first day Rogue had shown up and they’d both made fools of themselves to impress her or maybe that day in the museum when John’s anger had burned out of control. It might even have been the moment when Bobby watched his front yard explode in flames.
He wasn’t sure what moment it had been. Worse, he wasn’t sure if he regretted it. They’d been close for a long time, but even on the brightest day, the sun would eventually set.

John stared back and Bobby realized that not everything had changed. John’s eyes were still arrogant and his smile was still mocking. When he opened his mouth, he could still make Bobby want to hit him, even as he realized that John didn’t mean what he said.
Bobby looked at a friend and saw a stranger. He wondered what John saw when he looked back at him.

Still, from the way Bobby clenched his fist and the way ice climbed up his arm, he’d changed; different and yet, still the same old Bobby. He was afraid, but not enough to run. He was angry, but not enough to fight.
John sneered at him and he walked away. Someday, John was going to force him to make a choice.
