A/N: Set during X2
There was no premonition that kept Bobby awake that night. There was just hunger and an idle concern that he couldn’t place. Chocolate heath bar crunch wouldn’t make him sleepy, but it would occupy him while he tried to figure out what was keeping him awake. Things change, he mused, spoon swirling through the melting ice cream. He thought it again when Logan came in searching for beer. And again, just seconds after the sound of a helicopter became more than just a bad dream.
A few days later, he wondered if it had been a premonition after all.

Prompt: 36. Smell
Word Count: 100
Rating: PG
Warnings: none, really
A/N: Set after X2
Bobby knew that the sense of smell was the most likely to trigger memories. He’d learned that in Dr. Grey’s class, but he was unprepared for the day when a whiff of his mother’s favorite perfume in line at the movie theater sent him scrambling for the men’s room. Hidden in a dirty stall, he forced himself to relax. Breathing deeply, he drove her face from his mind, burying the familiar smell of her under the stark reality of the stale odor of urine and sweat and cigarettes. Eventually, he quit shaking long enough to pretend that he was fine.

Jubilee’s laughter…
The X-box game that John played obsessively…
Music booming down the hall from Kitty’s room…
Scott’s amused admonishment after some muffled explosion…
These were the melody of Bobby’s life for so long that when they vanished, it took him weeks to realize what was wrong. Instead, after Alkali Lake, he heard muffled sobs from Jubilee’s room when she woke from nightmares, John was conspicuous in his absence, Kitty turned off her radio, and Scott was never amused anymore. The whole school huddled in a muffled quiet.
Silence, thick and unbroken, Bobby learned, was the true sound of grief.
