LJ Strike

Mar. 20th, 2008 04:42 pm
Explanation Here for Those that Don't Know

I have decided that I will be participating in the LJ strike. I do not know if it will do any good and I don't do it as a statement of my entitlement belief.

I do it as a statement of my position on censorship.

"I [may]disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

This quote is widely attributed to Voltaire, but cannot be found in his writings. With good reason. The phrase was invented by a later author as an epitome of his attitude. It appeared in The Friends of Voltaire (1906), written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall under the pseudonym S[tephen] G. Tallentyre.

This has nothing to do with fandom, and everything to do with the people whose interests such as "depression" and "bisexuality," not to mention the ridiculous inclusion of "faeries" and "fanfiction" temporarily, at least, made them pariah.

I am a straight fanfiction writer who has suffered from depression in the past, and I do not appreciate being made to feel that my opinions do not matter to a company to which I give business. And I do not appreciate LJ PTB saying that such a reaction from me is "silly."

So, I will participate in a one-day boycott of LJ. I will not update, nor will I sign in until Saturday morning.

Best of luck to everyone who decides to participate.
