The first time Wyatt Cain saw the woman he would marry, he didn’t think much of her, at least not until she marched over to him, smiled. “Excuse me, sir, but I was wondering if you could give me directions to the market place.”
Blinded by her smile, Cain momentarily lost his ability to speak, until Zero elbowed him sharply in the side, and his manners were jostled loose. “I’m sorry, Miss.”
“My name is Adora.”
“Miss Adora.” Cain swallowed hard. “I’d be happy to escort you to the market place myself.”
“Oh, I’d hate to ask you to go out of your way.” Adora smiled again.
“It’s not.” Wyatt lied, praying that his partner wouldn’t stab him in the back and would just cover for him to their superiors. “It’s just the way I was going.”
He got two months extra guard duty for going missing on his shift. Zero got two as well, for inexplicably not knowing where his partner had gone.
*******
“I think I’m in love, Zero.” Cain leaned against the wall of the dormitory, ignoring the other young cadets racing around.
“With that young bit you escorted to the market a month back?” Zero didn’t look up from where he was polishing his boots. “She’s too good for you.”
“I know.” Cain crossed his arms and looked up at the ceiling despondently. “What am I supposed to do?”
Zero paused and looked at Cain in disgust. “If you love her, really love her, you’ll do whatever it takes to be with her.”
“Ahhh, Zero.” Cain clapped him on the back. “You’re such a romantic at heart.”
“No, I’m a realist.” Zero looked up. “You’ve got happiness in reach and you’re afraid to go for it.” He laughed under his breath. “I swear, Wyatt, sometimes I think you don’t have any courage.”
“Ass,” Cain responded, but there was no heat in his voice.
“If she’s the one for you, then fight for her.” Zero smiled at him exasperatedly. “Idiot.”
*******
“I’m going to ask her to marry me.” Cain and Zero were standing on the edge of the river, watching the crowds swarm in and out of the capital from the main gate.
“I know.” Zero answered calmly.
“How did you know?” Wyatt demanded suspiciously.
“You’ve been even more distracted and useless than usual lately.” Zero smirked at him, smugly. “Otherwise, you would have noticed that I’m being transferred to a different unit.”
“What?” Wyatt forgot about everything else for the moment and stared at Zero in astonishment. “Where are you transferring to?”
“I’ve been assigned to Princess Azkadellia’s guard.” His eyes shone in pleasure. “The Captain approved the transfer two weeks ago. I start next week.”
Cain shook his head. “I’m happy for you, Zero. I know you’ve wanted that for a while. But I hate losing you as a partner, friend.”
“Things change.” Zero smiled. “You’ve got Adora now. You’ll be busy… building a home.”
*******
Tears streamed down Cain’s face, and he was speechless.
Reaching out, he took the small bundle from Adora’s arms. “It’s a boy, Wyatt.” Adora smiled at him, tiredly. “A beautiful, perfect boy.”
“Of course he’s beautiful and perfect.” Cain found his voice. “He’s your son.”
“And yours.” Adora’s smile grew even more blindingly glorious than it had been on the day they met. “He’s ours, my love.”
Cain lifted the small sleeping bundle to his chest, and pressed the boy to his heart. Adora reached up and wiped his tears, ordering in mock sternness. “Quit crying, love or you’ll rust.”
Cain leaned down and kissed her. “It’d be worth rusting for you and Jeb.”
“I’d rather you not,” Adora laughed, leaning back against the head of the bed. “I’d like you in working order.”
“I love you, too.” Cain whispered and when Adora smiled at him, he thought his heart might burst in happiness.

Tears streamed down Cain’s face, and he was speechless.
Behind him, Glitch, Raw and DG stood uneasily. Cain ignored them, his vision blurring as he stared at the marker with Adora’s name on it. “No,” he whispered. “No.” Kneeling down, he reached out and ran his hand over it. “No.”
A hand on his shoulder startled him, but he didn’t look up. DG squeezed his shoulder. “Oh, Cain. I’m so sorry.”
“I loved her.” Cain said softly, looking away, not bothering to staunch his tears.
“She knew,” DG reassured him. “She had to know.”
Cain didn’t say anything for a long moment. DG stood beside him quietly, offering support that hurt more than it helped. “Eight years, I spent in that tin suit. Eight years… and I never cried. Not once, because I believed that somehow I’d find her again. Somehow, it would be alright.”
DG squeezed his shoulder tighter and Cain could feel his heart beating in his chest so hard he thought it might burst.
