Watari watched the relationship between L and Light develop and held his tongue. He had never seen L so wrapped up in anyone before, let alone a suspect in a murder. When L announced his plan to keep the young suspect handcuffed to him around the clock indefinitely, Watari kept silent.

Later, he sat at a table and sipped tea, ignoring the trembling of his fingers and the moisture that swam in his eyes. He had to trust L – he had always trusted L. Surely, this wouldn’t end up being the mistake that it seemed on the front end. Surely.
