Meme: Fanfic Conventions

I am taking this from both
harmonyangel and
smirnoffmule, because my pain pill wore off and it's 5 am and I can't sleep right now. Also, I'm so congested that I decided to cheat and use the nebulizer rather than cough, because it hurts a tremendous amount less.
I'm also stealing
smirnoffmule's disclaimer, because I like it.
Disclaimer: I fully acknowledge the success of many of these tropes is largely dependant on the skill of the writer and I do not believe that "not my thing" = bad.
Genderswap – I don't really get the appeal of genderswap fics and I tend to avoid them. I tend to find that they exist only to allow couples to hook up and it irks me. That said, I have read a few of them that fascinate me – but those deal more with the ways that people's lives might have changed if s/he were a different gender than the way hir sex life would have changed.
Bodyswap – I struggle with this idea as well, although it doesn't usually get the automatic pass that Genderswap does. There are some that are really funny (one by
likeadeuce comes to mind) and that are interesting. I also like it done well in canon materials – Buffy, FarScape, a few others come to mind.
A variety of this that I really like, though, is Powerswap. Same heroes, different powers. I find that intriguing.
Drunk!fic - Yes, I love it. I've not really written a lot of it, though. I should change that. But, it has to match up with real life experiences for me to buy it. Lowered inhibitions, sure. Saying too much, sure. Being a completely different person? Not su much.
Huddling together for warmth - Oh, old movies. I love thee so much. Fire, then fade to black. I love this. It works for me and I usually find it somewhat romantic, even when it's snarky and filled with, "this is all your fault!" Maybe especially then. Someone should write this soon…
Undercover in a gay bar - I love this convention. I especially love it, when the only "undercover" part turns out to be that one person is a cop or something, but actually fairly out of the closet.
Pretending to be married(/together) - Yes. I think this is fantastic. I love it in the movies, I love it in books, and I love it in fic. I've plotted an epic Psych fic surrounding this possibility and one day I shall write it!
Secretly a virgin - I don't get this one at all. Is the kink that the person is a virgin? That does nothing for me. Is the kink that s/he is lying about it? Still does nothing for me. Where's the fun or funny part?
Amnesia - I'd try this one. I've read a really good AU where Superman loses his memory and ends up in Marvelverse, much to the Marvel TPTB dismay. But, Supes just chills on an island and helps the people there. I enjoyed it immensely and need to find it again, now that I think about it…
Cross-dressing - As a thing, I don't really care. An entire fic about crossdressign would probably not draw me in. I don’t really find it sexy, but then I think about the Sex and the City episode where Charlotte dresses like a man and is photographed, and I think that's sexy. I've also read about a thing called "Kinging" and I find that utterly fascinating.
Also, where it's canon – and it happens in quite a few animes – I find it much more interesting. I particularly like it when a character crossdresses as the norm and everyone knows about it.
Forced to share a bed - Yes, please. I enjoy the hell out of this. As long as there are no fuzzy consent issues, I'm all about being forced to realize that proximity is a good thing. :D.
Aliens made them do it - I find this interesting. I know that there are consent issues, but I like seeing the fallout of it. I also don't mind the occasional PWP where this is the convention. But, I would find it interesting to see two characters dealing with the after affects of this in a real and genuine way.
Wingfic - Not until I discovered Warren Worthington, III. Or a book about angels from a while back, that I can't think of the name, but they were sexual beings and it was hot. I don’t really get Character X randomly grew wings, though.
Mpreg - No. I find this a huge turn off to a fic. I also don't like the idea of it in canon materials – with the single exception of Jack Harkness. I would love to read about the experience he mentioned in the first episode about being pregnant once and "not doing that again!"
Mistakenly assumed to be gay -Meh. This does nothing for me, though I quite like
smirnoffmule's suggestion of having it turn out that the mistake is a real mistake and then dealing with the fallout. I'd read that!
Let's play truth or dare - Yes, please. I love this in fic, I love Never Have I Ever, and I love them both in real life.
harmoneyangel suggested that this isn't a game that real adults play… I'm almost ashamed to say that isn't true. *lol*
Mary Sue fic - I avoid it, but I've read some in the past. I don't mind OCs, though, and think that there is a BIG difference.
Aphrodisiacs - Sure! Bring it on. I'd be interested to see what happened.
Curtain fic - I'm not sure that I know what this is… but if it's two people being domestic? Then, I'd give it a shot. I've read some fic by
ridesandruns that I think might qualify and enjoyed it a lot. Also, is this "slice of life" fic? Because I love that!
Hurt/Comfort - Yes. I like to read it. I like to write it. I like everything about it. And if you're interested in making some recs, I happen to have a recs post for January right here, so mosey on over and tell me your favorite. Any fandom!
Apocalypse fic - Unf. I have a weakness for apocalypse fic. I love
apocalyptothon and I'm trying my hand and the
apocabigbang. End the world, baby. Do it. And let me see what happens next. Seriously, I love this idea and I will see any movie that features it. Bring on The Road and that Denzel Washington movie that I can't remember. I blame Stephen King's The Stand, but my mother and I stayed up and watched the entire thing one Christmas Eve (seasonal, isn't it?) and I've been hooked ever since. I got the book that year, too. So much love!
Someone has a baby/Baby!fic - I'd give it a bit to catch me, but I don't really find the idea of someone procreating alone to be worth reading about. It'd have to be fun and interesting to really get my attention.
Telepathic soulbonding - This is a lot more popular in some anime fandoms than in regular fandoms, I think. I will give it a try, but usually I find it a thinly veiled attempt to force an OTP down someone's throat.
Werewolves mate for life - Again, I dislike OTP's shoved down my throat, but I'd certainly give it a try.

Date: 2010-01-06 12:12 pm (UTC)Slice of life, I love, but domestic when the people just don't seem very super-domestic? Not so much. I don't know. It has to be in character if the characters are fighting over an oven mitt. LOL.
May steal this meme!

Date: 2010-01-06 02:39 pm (UTC)I don't know if college students count as "real adults," but I distinctly remember a very . . . interesting Chanukah party I threw in my dorm room back in my senior year. At which the main amusement was a variation called, for some reason, Vomit Dreidel, in which a dreidel was used to determine if you had to tell a truth, take a dare, dare someone to do something, or do nothing.

I agree on the Aliens Made Them Do It thing - I like it anyway, but it's always interesting to see these things tackled in a realistic way. I'm having all sorts of plot bunnies since doing this meme about tackling/subverting some of these tropes.
And hey, I love the Stand! I read it when I had the flu once, which was exciting. I keep meaning to find a copy of the mini-series and re-watch, since it's been years and years and I remember it being rather good.
