"Be reasonable." Fiona blocked the door.

"Move, Fi." Michael's jaw clenched so hard that he gave himself a headache. "I can't leave kids at the mercy of a father like that."

"You always do this, Michael. Some woman tells you a sob story and you rush to play white knight."

Michael shoved Fiona, only slightly surprised to end up on the floor with her straddling him. The surprise came when she leaned down and wrapped her arms around him.

"You can't save everyone, Michael. You can't even save yourself."

Michael closed his eyes to keep her from seeing his tears.
