Title: Ignorance is Bliss (yeah, I know it's lame, but I can't think of anything else, and I want to post now... *lol*)
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: VERY spoilery for the series if you haven't watched, deals with character death
A/N: Again, I'm being drawn back into this fandom, but the secrets request sparked a memory. And, this is a scene that actually happened, I just dug a little into what he must have been thinking. Also, this is DAY 10. I can't believe I've stuck in for this long... hehehe.

“Walk out of this cabin while you still can…” The words fell on her, each like a blow, and her face crumbled. Forcing herself not to burst into tears in front of the man who had just ordered her to leave, Kara turned and groped blindly for the door.

Adama watched her leave and then sank into his chair. He’d watched the end of the world come and go, but that hadn’t left him feeling as much helpless rage as he’d felt at Kara’s simple statement.

“Zak failed basic flight… but I passed him anyway.” She’d barely managed to get the words out in a coherent manner. A voice in the back of his mind was telling him to proceed cautiously, that Kara never cried, that the anguish looking out at him from her
eyes was punishment enough, but for the first time since the Cylons had resurfaced, he’d lost the ability to control himself.

“Walk out of this cabin while you still can…” It was a threat, but it was also a warning. Leave, Kara, before I say something to you that I will regret for the rest of my life… Leave before I hurt you in the way that knowing this hurt me… Leave before I lose you, and therefore lose my last remaining tie with Zak…

Adama was a military man by nature. He depended on being able to act, to move, to respond to the catastrophes that faced him. Attending his son’s funeral was the worst moment in his life, it was the most helpless he’d ever been. Until now... Finding out that Zak never should have been in that Viper was almost more than he could stand.

He was the Commander of the Colonial Fleet and he’d led the remnants of humanity away from its greatest catastrophe, but he was brought to his knees by the whispered confession of a crying woman. Dropping his head into his hands, he fought to control himself. Part of him wanted to chase Kara down and throttle her… part of him wanted to chase Kara down and reassure her that it had been an accident… Instead, he did nothing.

His arms were shaking… his hands were shaking… With great deliberation, Adama put his hands firmly on his desk. He could not go to pieces. The fleet needed him. He could not give into his desire to retaliate against Kara. The fleet needed her.

Zak…

Forcing himself to take deep breaths, he faced the knowledge head on. Zak was dead. He had died in a flight accident. Kara had just informed him that she had passed him through basic flight because she had loved him, because they had been engaged.

Why did you tell me, Kara? Why did you let me force that out of you? Why did you tell Lee…

Adama’s military nature was urging him to face the situation head on and refuse to flinch from reality. But gods, he wished he didn’t know this.

After Zak’s funeral, Adama had been surprised to find that Kara was seeking to leave her position at the flight school. He’d been pleased that she had requested to be transferred to the Galactica. It would give him a chance to discover what his youngest son had seen in her.

He had, too. She was fiercely determined, passionate, wild, and so damn good at her job that he freely admitted she was the best pilot he’d ever seen. Including Lee. Including himself.

Zak and Kara had waited to get married. They’d been trying to find a time when he could attend the wedding, but Adama had insisted on putting them off. In fact, he’d been busy all the way until he’d heard about Zak’s accident.

Funny how you only have time for someone once their gone…

Zak’s gone. I’ll never get him back…

How was he supposed to live with Kara now? He loved her like a daughter, even as furious as he was, he couldn’t deny that. He loved Kara because of all the things she was, but he wasn’t blind to her faults either.

The only question now was whether or not he’d be able to forgive her. The answer would only come with time.
