It was the rarest of nights in Gotham – a night where nothing pressing was going on. Bruce shut off his computer and contemplated how to spend his evening. Alfred had the night off, Tim was out with friends, all the known criminals were safely ensconced in Arkham.
Bruce debated for a moment before pouring himself a drink and going to sit on the veranda. Rare opportunities to rest weren’t to be squandered lightly. From the western veranda, he could see the lights of Gotham. It was almost peaceful looking.
Sipping his scotch, Bruce sighed. Quiet nights were boring.
Just as he was debating doing something drastic, like putting on a suit and making a social visit to some business associates, his cell phone rang. Flipping it open, Bruce grimaced at the number. “Yes?”
“Is that any way to greet an old friend?”
Bruce snorted. “I’ll let you know when I’m talking to an old friend.”
“Hmm, good point. How about a new friend?”
“Tony,” Bruce sighed and dropped it. “Where are you?”
“Funny you should ask that. Look up.”
“What?”
“Look up.” Tony repeated and Bruce did as he was told.
“You want to tell me what that bright light zooming towards my house is?” Bruce asked, sounding more like his crime fighting counterpart than the international playboy.
“Surprise! I’m coming to pay a visit.”
“Tony!”
“Relax. No one knows where I’m am. Well, except you.”
“Why me?”
“Because we’re friends.” Bruce could almost hear the smirk in Tony’s voice. When he didn’t answer, Tony continued. “I’m a little hurt that you’d have to ask.”
“It’s one thing for Tony Stark to drop by and visit, but don’t you think that people may get suspicious if Iron Man stops by?”
“I’m not telling them.”
“Go home, Tony.”
“I can’t, Bruce. I need to borrow some tools.”
“What?” Bruce couldn’t keep the astonishment from his voice. Tony Stark had more tools than he had money and lord knew he had plenty of both.
“The clamp holding the helmet in place broke and I don’t have the tools I need to fix it at my Manhattan apartment.”
“So you thought you’d just put the suit on and fly here?” Bruce stood up as the bright light grew large enough to be recognizable as Iron Man.
“Yeah.” The crime fighter slammed down into the yard, leaving a small crater that would give Alfred fits the following day. He looked up and waved. “I like a big entrance.” He crossed the yard in large strides, then gave a small jump to land on the veranda beside Bruce. Reaching up, he pulled off his helmet and flicked the broken clamp with his finger. “See? Broken.”
Bruce shook his head. “You’re insane.”
Tony snorted as he reached over and snagged Bruce’s drink. "I’m not the one who does all this wearing fortified leather only."
“True.” Bruce took his drink back before Tony could taste it. Moving towards the door, he waited for Tony to follow him. “You cheat.”
“What?” Tony’s protest was more amused than angry. “I don’t cheat! I just use my brain instead of my brawn.” He followed Bruce to the liquor cabinet, accepting the drink that Bruce gave him. “And admit it… you were probably just sitting there hoping that I’d drop by unannounced.”
Bruce thought about his peaceful night and mentally waved goodbye. “Something like that.”
“See?” Tony grinned. “I knew that. Ours is a friendship for the ages.”

Date: 2008-06-18 07:39 am (UTC)You know I've been lurking around your journal reading your excellent TSCC fic. So of course I couldn't resist this little gem.
I flove Batman, and Ironman was the ish! What better way to make the awesome even more awesomer (Is that even a word?) but to bring these two billionaire, inventor, heroes together. That you did it, without losing the character voice for either of them is worthy of high praise. Bravo!
Do you mind if I friend you?
